Rate this book
It is coming up to Christmas and Watson fears that Holmes may face the festive season without a case to occupy him. The man who calls tells of a haunted property. This is not the case that Watson hoped would arise, yet Holmes accepts the commission. Watson is sceptical and then another matter is brought to Baker Street by Inspector Lestrade which is more promising. Soon, there is an unexpected visit to Reading Gaol. Can the two cases be linked? Holmes and Watson immerse themselves in the facts which emerge and get to some surprising conclusions. Holmes arranges a Christmas party. Will all be revealed or will there be matters unresolved?

Apparently this is part of a series of stories but I must have gotten this one as a freebie. I don't think the previous stories impacted the reading of this one, though.

The story read like two mysteries and I was waiting for them to be combined with the resolution but alas, that didn't happen. I was just two separate mysteries and that confused me a little bit. But they were both still interesting and certainly had that Holmes feel to the story.

On the shorter side so this is a quick read if you are looking for a Holmesian story starring your favorite characters from the canon.

I am a lover of all things Sherlock Holmes. This book was a very interesting set of mysteries for our favorite consulting detective to follow. The story was well thought out, and written in the same. manner that Doyle used. The characters were well placed, but not overly in the way. Dr. Watson was his usual helpful, if a bit clueless fellow, as was Scotland Yard. Mycroft makes a few appearances, which I always enjoy. Their enlightened banter is always entertaining. The only fault is in the title. Sherlock Holmes is not known for facts that cannot be explained, and so one suspects right away, that if the author ,is worth his salt the aspect of paranormal creatures will not pan out. Christmas does go on around them, and the Dr. enjoys the sights, while Sherlock Holmes would rather spend his time solving puzzles, which is what he does best. A good read.

Watson hopes Holmes will have a case to distract him from the empty frivolity of the Christmas holiday. Watson doesn't like the first case that offers, and the second one, more substantive and sponsored by Mycroft, attracts his disapproval. My personal reaction is to appreciate the A. Conan Doyle style with which the book begins, but due to the fragility of the plot, the "resolution" is more a "dissolution".

Ruben's review

Dislike the ending of the first story, not consistent with solving the main issue. Not worth the reading at all.
