Understanding Anemia gently builds upon elementary knowledge of biology to provide the general reader with a fairly sophisticated understanding of the various causes of anemia, the methods used to make diagnoses, and the principles of treatment. The book begins with a definition of anemia and a brief history of the scientific study of blood. It explains how the doctor makes the diagnosis and details the main types of anemia. Since the different conditions result from the failure of various organs, the reader will come away with a surprisingly broad understanding of human anatomy and physiology, encompassing the digestive, circulatory, and immune systems, nutrition, biochemistry, and heredity.

I highly recommend this book is you are a lay person seeking to understand anemia. The book steps the reader through from the basics of cell biology to what is anemia, how it is diagnosed and the biology of various types of anemia.

The author is very thoughtful on building the knowledge base in such a way that the reader is able to rapidly engage with increasingly complex topics. The book does not hold back on the technical, but approaches the technicalities thoughtfully.

I come away from the book with a much deeper appreciation for red blood cells, their formation and their critical role in the human body.

Very helpful book that explains the whole process of how blood functions in the body, the different causes of anemia (as well as different types - I have been to several doctors for my anemia and not one ever explained the types to me) and treatments based on the causes. Definitely would recommend this book to anyone struggling with anemia.
