This was a tough one. I felt like I was lacking in knowledge about hunting in Somerset and it'd be good to get some background. This was originally published in the 1860s, so I knew it would be un-apologetically pro. In fact I learnt very little about stag-hunting, except that the animals are known by different names at different stages of live and that deer might swim up to three miles out to sea if it thinks it can avoid being caught on the shore (apparently, having your stag which you've hunted for miles plucked out of the sea by a passing trawler and sold along the coast is not uncommon!). i got more from this about mid-19th century class structure. Every other page has some mention of how grateful the country-people are, or how terrible it is that poachers are tempted into poaching by the promise of riches from the aristocracy, when they wouldn't normally know any better. He is also in love with a book called the Art of Venerie, printed during Elizabeth I's reign and quoted from it liberally, sometimes several pages long. So, not a great writer, tough subject matter, but fascinating bit of social history.
