Charleston: A Keepsake

Rate this book
One hundred and thirty photographs highlight the history, culture, and sparkle of Charleston, South Carolina, once considered the jewel of England's crown. Tag along on this tour of a town with a storied past, from grand tourist magnets like MiddletonPlantation to the humbling Old Slave Mart Museum. Meander along streets lined with live oak trees. Glimpse lovely gardens behind wrought iron gates. Imagine the smell of blooming jasmine thick in the air and the clip-clop sounds of horse-drawn carriages. For the resident, frequent visitor, or armchair traveler, these photographs capture the soul of an assertive southern belle.

This is a delightful photographic tour of Charleston, So. Carolina which serves to whet the appetite for more--travel, photographs and information. I've never been to Charleston but it is a city I've wanted to visit. This book serves many purposes in my view: a wonderful keepsake, a beautiful tour guide for the armchair traveler and an inducement to further study of that beautiful and historic city. Many pages led me to wish for more information about the images I was viewing. I wanted to know about its colonial and Civil War history, but also about the present day city and the farmers' market and the making of sweetgrass baskets. I also wondered about looking for more information about some of the historic buildings and plantations. I was surprised at the photo of Fort Sumter, expecting a larger site. Now I feel a need to learn something more about that important Civil War site. Charleston seems a city living in many eras and this book evokes them all.

All keepsake books should be so evocative!

The only problem with this book is that it's too short. This book is filled with breathtaking photographs of Charleston that mixes old Southern Charm with a bit of the present. It is one of those books that transport you there and gives you a glimpse of what she was once like.

I received a copy from netgalley.

Charleston: A Keepsake by: Antelo Devereux Jr. My husband and I will be visiting Charleston this summer. I was shocked to find this awesome photography book on NetGalley and thrilled when I was accepted to receive  copy.

The pictures in this book are fantastic. This book really gives you a wonderful look at Charleston. I loved the southern charm of the buildings. One of my favorite photos is on page 91 it is a brick wall with a huge oak tree behind it. It just really spoke to me. I was raised southern and in small towns. Now I live I Florida and we visit St. Augustine a lot. The photo's in this remind me of St. Augustine. I know I am going to love visiting Charleston. I can't wait to see the places in this book in person.
