USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Pulkinen has always been fascinated with things that go bump in the night. Of course, when you grow up next door to a cemetery, the dead (and the undead) are hard to ignore. Pair that with her passion for writing and her love of a good happily-ever-after, and becoming a paranormal romance author seems like the only logical career choice.

Before she decided to turn her love of the written word into a career, Carrie spent the first part of her professional life as a high school journalism and yearbook teacher. She loves red wine and chocolate, and in her free time, she likes to read, take pictures, and spend time with her family.

Reawakened, Carrie Pulkinen

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  Romance, Sci-fi and fantasy

Vampires and romance....a good hook for me.
Trouble is there's so many different styles of romance, whether paranormal or not and for me this was a style that doesn't really work for me.
If you like Celia Kyle, T.S.Joyce, Bella Forest then this book may well appeal to you. they're all popular authors whose write what I think of as light and fluffy paranormal reads, where the story is mainly the romance, but with a little back-plot  and excitement underlying it. For me though books need to have a little more substance, a bit extra to hold my interest.

Its a perfectly well written book, a story that adds up, some fun plots and the usual secrets that creep out.
Its just that for me its all a bit too simplistic, too easy to read with everything falling into place so easily, when I need something a little more edgy, angsty, problems that the characters have to work really hard to overcome.
I need to feel there's a real chance the characters romance won't survive the pressures put on it, that the problems they have, the dangers they face may all be just too much.

There's nothing I really dislike about this book, just nothing that would want me to keep it, re-read it either.

Stars: Three, a fun read but I need a bit extra.

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a copy of Reawakened from the author for a review via Full Moon Bites Book Tours.

Juliann "Jules" Humes is a single parent who has raised her daughter Beth by herself. Beth's father left her before Beth was born. Beth's father was never in her life. He never came to see her. He never had nor wanted visitation rights to see her. So this made Jules a single mother because he was never a part of their lives. He didn't pay child support. If he had been in Beth's life and paid child support then Jules would have no right to claim to be a single parent.

After what Beth's father had left her high and dry with a child on the way. Jules never wanted nor trusted another man. She had promised herself she would never fall in love with anyone else. She would never let another man hurt her like Beth's father did. But as the saying goes never say never because usually it will come back and bite you in the ass. When Beth first laid eyes on Ian she was lost in the romance that she so desired. Never understanding the force that drew her to him.

Ian has a feeling that someone is staring at him. He turns and sees Jules looking at him and when he looks into her eyes he feels as if he has known and loved her for years and years. He knows that he is looking into the eyes of his soul mate for eternity. Ian thinks he has just laid eyes on the most beautiful woman who he has seen in years.

Ian has a secret about who he is and what he is and when Jules finds out his secret she doesn't believe him. What he has told her is not true and could never be true. But when she starts having dreams about Ian and herself she begins to wonder if he is not speaking the truth. Ian keeps odd hours like he only works at night. He will only take Jules out at night even though she has asked him to go to lunch with her.

Jules really has the hots for Ian and wants to take their relationship a step further but Ian is always telling her that now is not the time that they must wait. This is not want Ian actually wants to do but he has to give Jules time to figure everything out and accept who and what he is before they can take their relationship further. It has nothing to do with how he feels about her.

Jules ask Beth questions about Ian like who is he? What is he? Beth is like mom Ian is different. He is not someone you want to get involved with. Beth tries to talk her mom out of dating Ian. Jules is so enamored with Ian that there is no way she can do what Beth ask of her. But her mind tells her to leave him alone just walk away and let him be. But her heart tells her a different story.

Reawakened is very different from most books about vampires that I have had the opportunity to read. I know, I know I am always saying it but Reawakened is a very great book to read. If you haven't read it yet. Then I suggest that you get your hands on a copy today it is that good. Loved it. Loved, loved the way Ian treated Jules. You know like in an old fashion kind of way.

A single mum who swore off ‘needing a man’, and an ethereally beautiful man who appears to shatter that resolution to bits. Cleverly combining real life issues with the fantastical to create a story that sets your romantic notions aflame, the author has created a story that begs to be read to the conclusion.

As children, we believe in magic and the impossible and then life interrupts and removes that ability to believe in things that are not of the norm. Jules was quietly living a life and was content being a mum and provider, or so she thought. Enter Ian, the man to set all of those ‘childish’ romantic notions aside, and Jules suddenly finds herself enmeshed in the world of the impossible, or so she believed.

With a premise that will have you wondering just what will happen next, and a romance that feels real, even with the unanswered questions, the author has created a very worthwhile read with a happily for now that will have you hungry for the next chapter. Written with a deft hand, we see little peeks into Ian’s real age with his conversation, reminiscent of a day gone by and his chivalrous, near impossible to find manner. Jules is very much the modern woman, independent and rather conflicted by feeling protected and safe within a man’s arms. Their interaction and development feels natural, Ian has a calming effect on Jules, although her matter-of – fact acceptance of the ‘things that go bump in the night’ was rather glossed over and felt a bit unrealistic. It was not enough to detract from the story, although left a little niggling thought in my brain. More distracting, however, was the irregularities in pacing – from fast to near snail-like, the real issue this book only rated a 4 stars from me. I will look forward to reading the next in this series, or any other title by this author, as I feel she is certainly one to watch with much skill and talent that is still developing.

I received an eBook copy from author for purpose of honest review with tour hosted by Full Moon Bites. I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

What do you do when you swear off love and someone comes into your life and starts to knock down every wall you ever built? Do you allow your heart to remain harden or do you open up and let the love blossom? What do you do when you don't believe in things that go bump in the night, but one night those things reveal themselves to you? Well Jules Hume is about to be faced with those very same questions and she will have to work through what she believes in and what she wants. It is not so cut and dry but Jules has sworn off love. She is raising her daughter by herself just fine and she feels she does not need a man. She is content in how she is living until she meets Ian.

Ian is a mystery all to himself because he is a little weird. He is insanely beautiful for one and for two he works weird hours. He shows up at the weirdest times and he gets under Jules skin. Jules has sworn off men but she can not resist the urge and the pull towards Ian. Jules is not sure what to do because she has shut off her heart but she can't help but want Ian and Ian wants her. He wants her by his side and he will not take no for an answer. Soon Ian is courting Jules and he wears her down enough for her to open up her heart and she let's him in.

Only there is more to Ian then meets the eye and Jules is about to be confronted with another thing she thought was different. Ian confides in Jules and shares his secret and when he does she is non-believing at first but once Ian shows her she has no other choice but to believe him and decides to stand by him. See Ian is a vampire king and he has to save the world from a demon attack.

Come along on the greatest ride for a trip you will not forget. Meet a great heroine and hero and decide for yourself what you would believe in!

Okay. It's about vampires, but the good news is that Carrie Pulkinen creates a unique take on the vampire stories in her book Reawakened.

Jules is a regular woman who has had a hard life but nothing extremely extraordinary until she meets Ian. His Scottish accent is enough to make any woman swoon, but there is something more. Something about him seems off yet just right. He's a vampire but claims to be much more than that for her and her alone. The next thing you know, her life is turned upside down and memories surface that have been suppressed that will help save her and her daughter's life.

I love it when an author can take something that is common such as the vampire stories and almost overly done like the vampire stories and come up with something new and refreshing. Carrie Pulkinen has done just that. In fact, though Ian is a vampire, that is not the focus of the story, and I like that. There is so much more to this which makes it an enjoyable read.

The pace is relatively fast but not too much. You can easily set the book down and pick it right back up where you left off without breaking a sweat. The plot is very well done with several twists and turns. A few of them even caught me off guard.

There was some confusion at one point in the story as things began to unravel and be revealed. I can't say too much in the details as it would be a spoiler, but I had to read a few sections over again and some details were still not clear. There were also some language in it though it was very minor. The sex was extremely limited though there were many extremely hot scenes that were just a taste of what was to come.

An enjoyable read that I recommend.

I loved Jules Hume. She was a strong single mom - raised her daughter by herself - and had long ago decided that she could make it on her own and didn't need a man. She had sworn off love until she met Ian. Ian was a bit of a mystery, working odd hours, unearthly beautiful, and undeniably appealing. Jules is drawn to Ian and finds herself breaking the no need for love rule, but there is a good reason behind this....but I can't tell you or I might ruin the surprise.

My only real complaint about this book was with how easily Jules accepted the fact that Ian is a vampire. I don't think any person in their right mind would be able to just move on and live with that information the way Jules does, but then she is a special woman. There is a minor secondary romance between Jules' daughter and Ian's friend that at times added to the story, but at times it also drew too much attention away from the main characters. Parts of this story moved a bit fast for my taste, but most of it was drawn out just enough to have to turn the next page to find out what happened.

Carrie pens "Reawakened" with a plot that keeps you turning the page and wondering what's going to happen next. Her characters are believable and well developed...I found myself captivated with them and the storyline to the point where I could actually see it happening. Highly recommended for all vampire, werewolf, thriller fans.

Juliann (Jules) Hume found herself pregnant at sixteen and rejected by the father and his family. She raised her child Beth by herself and now in her late thirties Beth is an adult. Jules works as a graphic artist at a law firm and Beth works at a restaurant called the Dive. It was at the Dive that she first saw Ian Kincaid. As soon as their eyes met it was an instant attraction and when they touched it was like electricity shot through her.

For months Jules and Ian dated and not once would he do anything but kiss. He only saw her at night and it was Beth who broke the news to her that Ian was a vampire. Beth is dating Cameron who works at the Dive and apparently Beth could not be glamoured like every other human who left the club. The nights were when vampires came and she saw what was going on. Cameron confessed everything but Ian has yet to reveal what he is.

There was always a legend in Jules's family that magic ran in their family and that they were descendant's of a Medieval Scottish King. Jules never believed in any of it but she was about to have her life changed. She has always had premonitions and they always came true, now she has dreams of Ian but at times she feels they are more memories than dreams. She accepts that Ian is a vampire and loves him in spite of that but when he begins to refer to her as his lost Queen she finds that hard to swallow. She questions whether his feelings are for her or for someone he knew in the past.

When Jules is kidnapped by another vampire claiming that he wants her power she has no idea what he is talking about. Although she does have premonitions does that mean she has magical abilities. Ian saves her but her life is definitely in danger and she begins to learn more and more about her and Ian. Why does Ian claim he loves her but refuses to sleep with her? Does she have powers that have not been revealed yet? Is she really Ian's long lost Queen?

The characters in this book were wonderful and the story was filled with surprises and suspense. From the moment I started this book I couldn't put it down because I was as interested in finding out the truth as Jules was and I was not disappointed.
