The Mid-Atlantic states of Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland host some of the finest rock climbing in the country. This guide features over 1,000 routes at more than 20 areas throughout the region. The best routes at the classic destinations are all covered -- Seneca Rocks, the New River Gorge, Summersville, Great Falls, and Carderock -- but also included are many never-before-published areas. This book, written by one of the area's leading activists and most knowledgeable climbers, is a must-have for locals and visitors alike.
Much-needed addition to guidebook libraries for the greater Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia climbing community. It is not a comprehensive book by any stretch. In order to cover *every* crag in *each* of the three states would require a much, much fatter tome - or a lot of additional information to be left out. Not, this is an overview of most of the more popular/visited crags in the three states. It even includes the elusive, hard-to-find Old Rag rocks in the Shenandoah. If you're just going to be in the area for a short time, and want to get a feel for what's around, this is the book to get. If you are going to be here for an extended period of time, this is a good book to get you started before you begin picking up the other more state or crag specific guides that will get you to the meat of the matter.
Note: this guide has had a second edition printed in 2013, but this review only covers the first (2001) edition
The must-have guide for east coast climbing. My copy is dirty, mud stained, water stained, and bruised around the edges but I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's got all my fav climbing areas bookmarked.
An excellent guide to the major climbing areas (and a couple of off the beaten path ones) in these states. Heavily illustrated with crag photos and route maps. A great companion for a climbing road trip in this area.
