Mazael Cravenlock is the last of the Demonsouled, and defeated a great dark power to save the world. But with that dark power dead, a new one rushes to takes its place, led by the sinister Prophetess of Marazadra. And unless Mazael stops her, the Prophetess will use the Mask of Marazadra to summon her wicked goddess, plunging the world into darkness...
Standing over six feet tall, USA Today bestselling author Jonathan Moeller has the piercing blue eyes of a Conan of Cimmeria, the bronze-colored hair of a Visigothic warrior-king, and the stern visage of a captain of men, none of which are useful in his career as a computer repairman, alas.
He has written the DEMONSOULED series of sword-and-sorcery novels, and continues to write THE GHOSTS sequence about assassin and spy Caina Amalas, the COMPUTER BEGINNER'S GUIDE series of computer books, and numerous other works. His books have sold over one million copies worldwide.
Stayed awake past 2:00 a.m. to finish this. As usual (always?) in fantasies, the good guys prevailed. I enjoyed finding out what happened to the baddies in this. You do need to read all three volumes since it is an ongoing tale which is not resolved until book 3.
One question I had that I don't think was ever answered: How did the Prophetess acquire the spider she wore that gave her superior magical powers? She does state that she discovered information regarding Marazadra in the library of the wizard's school. Was she able to create her spider and the resulting heart spiders from what she learned there? Not terribly important but just a loose end.
A personal irritant was the necessity of addressing the Tervingi as so and so, son of so and so. Really? Who cares?
Although some of the outcome of the final battle was rather gruesome, I felt the punishments were justified. Then it occurs to me, where did the Prophetess find the Guardian? Who was he prior to wearing the Mask of Swords? There is also a surprising twist brought about by Sigaldra.
Mr. Moeller is able to introduce couple's attractions that are compelling but not all-consuming as in the case of romance novels.
There is ample room for further adventures for Mazael and his cohorts, especially given the warning by Azurvaltoria near the end. Too bad he is already 40 years of age, since apparently even Demonsouled slow down after their prime.
Now out of the 10 books of the 15 in the series so far I'll have to admit that this to me had to be one of the better and most surprising endings that there could have been. Not only did one of Maezal's former squires who became a Lord With his own lands and titles he ended up with new people under his banner for his lands and they ended up making more friends and allies. I highly doubt that this will in fact be lasting peace but will in fact just be a reprieve for Maezel and the Grim Marches. I'm enjoying this series and I'm glad I've stuck with it so far.
Mask of Spells (Mask of the Demonsouled Book 3) Review
Dear Jonathan, what an excellent follow up trilogy! As you may have noticed I really enjoy reading your stories. Your characters and plot lines are outstanding and the stories are also wonderful. Thanks for the entertainment! I highly recommend that all adults read your wonderful stories as I am sure they will enjoy them as much as I have.
These just keep getting better and better. It's so fun to journey with all these people, and meet new ones on the way. Few spelling errors, or wrong name in certain places, but the main story lets you forgive those errors, and enjoy the story. I highly recommend the entire Demonsouled series (Demonsouled, and Mask of Demonsouled) to everyone. Can't wait for the new books (2 are out now, but I'm waiting until all 3 are released to start them.)
