Voices from the past. These are the voices of the American GI who served during WWII, the generation that Tom Brokaw aptly named "The Greatest Generation."
"Yank" was a weekly publication during that horrible conflagration called WWII, an era still seared into the American psyche. "Yank's" mission was to allow the rank and file soldier, sailor, airman, or marine, to share his ideas and impressions of military life and the conduct of the war. Although this magazine was dedicated to the enlisted man, on occasion officers were allowed to make contributions.
In "The Best from YANK, the Army Weekly," we get a glimpse into how the average GI viewed his life, his loves, hopes, failures, and concerns. We read of great exploits, self-sacrifice, and even the mundane. During this most horrific of conflagrations, the GI was capable of inspiring future generations by his extraordinary heroism while, simultaneously, entertaining us with his oh-so-human peccadillos. Our beloved American GI was, at the same time, ordinary and extraordinary.
Our WWII vets, members of "The Greatest Generation," have been described as "ordinary men called upon to do an extraordinary job."
"Yank" does a great job of illustrating just what an extraordinary job they did.
Once again, I leap to attention and salute my father's generation, the generation that literally saved the world.

If you're looking for a top flight collection of primary sources from WWII enlisted men, look no farther. The variety and quality of a lot of these is really excellent.
