Between the fear of getting burnt and getting caught, it was always a freaky experience but to know that there was nothing to stop a fire - no one to come to the rescue. This is Eli's stream-of-consciousness story, telling of her life before and after an unknown sickness has wiped out most of the population.
Eli's emotional narration is an account of tenacity and self determination; of nonconformity and rebellion; of friendship adn family; of love, loss, and becoming a woman. Woven through it all is social and political perspective ranging from sexual mores to gun safety, which add substance to this tale.
