Why wouldn't Gareth listen to reason? Naomi Pemberton reluctantly agreed to a two-year separation from her fiance. Although she knew Gareth was the only man for her, he wanted her to be sure.
Then he returned, but by that time Naomi was caring for the illegitimate baby of her sister, Clare, and trying to help Clare's abandoned boyfriend cope with fatherhood.
Could anyone blame Gareth for jumping to conclusions and swearing he never wanted to see Naomi again?

Simple solution...trip to the gyn with fiance in tow. The doc could tell him she had never given birth. This one goes on the "Books I Loathe" list although loathe may be a bit strong but I did dislike it. He wouldn't believe her no matter how many times she told him she was not the mother it took some else's word for him to finally believe. Read this on openlibrary.com
Lots of angst in this story. The older Gareth insisted on a two year separation because he thought the heroine too young to marry.
Of course he comes back two years later to find the heroine with a baby and living with the babies father. No matter how many times Naomi insists it is her sisters baby and she is just helping Brian out, Gareth wont believe it.
The angsty goodness goes on and on and we know that he is still dopey over her even though he can't get past her supposed betrayal.

I think the hero got off way too lightly for his behavior. The heroine should of made him work for it in the end. It was an emotional read at times, that's for sure. It was a nice book to read before bed. It left me feeling fulfilled instead of miserable, like some novels do.
i fail to understand why the heroine did not ask Clare's boyfriend's mother to tell Gareth the truth when no one she knew were ready to tell Gareth anything about the baby's own parents.

This whole story was a bit too much! The H and h started out to be a happy couple, very much in love, but Gareth stubbornly keeps insisting that Naomi is too young to know for sure if she wants to make a lifetime commitment, so he decides to take a job away for two years, to give her time to grow up and be sure. (She seemed grown up and self-assured to me. I'd be inclined to say Gareth was getting cold feet!) And he sure picked a time to decide to give in to their desires and do the deed, right before he takes off for two years! What if Naomi decided Gareth wasn't the guy for her after all? She may have regretted giving her V card to him! As it was, she had hoped their making love would change his mind about leaving: WRONG!
Even worse, he wants no contact at all while they're apart, no calls, letters, nothing! He thinks that's best. (What she thinks doesn't seem to count.)
To make things worse, Naomi, through her good nature (that gets taken advantage of) ends up taking care of her baby niece, when her sister Claire leaves her live-in baby daddy to concentrate on her acting career, without the stigma of unwed mother (this was written in the early 80's when people still cared) to interfere. Brian, baby Becky's irresponsible nitwit of a dad, needs all the help he can get looking after her, and comes to depend on Naomi (far too much.)
To make matters worse, Naomi's parents are two big pains in the ass! Her father's too angry at Claire for having a baby out of wedlock that he won't even acknowledge his granddaughter, and her mother's only concern seems to be Claire making a success of her acting career, and believing Naomi can handle looking after the baby, as if it were no problem at all, just the thing she should do! Of course, she can't help out, as Hubby will have a fit, and she can only sneak over to Brian's place to see the baby once in a while, but that's about it. UNBELIEVABLE!!! Brian's mom helps out when she can, but she's not well, and so Naomi becomes a mom to her niece for the time being.
The two years go by, Gareth returns, but when he says Naomi with Brian and the baby, he jumps to the wrong conclusion and stubbornly refuses to believe the truth! He could have used a good punch, or two or three! Anyway, he was the one who thought she needed time to be sure of what she wanted, so if she had decided she wanted to move on with another guy and have his baby, then he had no cause to complain.
When Brian decides he can't cope and disappears, leaving Naomi at a loss, Gareth steps in to play the White Knight, but one with a bad attitude! He feels betrayed, thinking Naomi slept with Brian and had his baby! This guy is more stubborn than all those "betrayed" h's in other books put together! He takes so long to see reason, that when he finally does, you wish Naomi had said, "Too little, too late" and kicked him to the curb! (And the rest of her family with them, as they get reasonable at the last minute, too. Bunch of jerks!)
This h was just too nice for her own good.
