You want to know how to make one of my favorite Adult Western series even better? Bring in a potential werewolf. I am not joking.

Lone Star and the Kansas Wolves has Jessie and Ki traveling to a little Kansas town with an immigrant population plagued by wolves. Jessie figures her old enemy the Cartel is involved and as she digs into the scenario, she finds a scummy dude out to buy the farmland on the cheap, a murderous pack of wolves seemingly impervious to bullets, and a gorgeous and canny female assassin set on their trail by the Cartel. It's a plot that could easily be hokey, but in this installment, just leads to more action, more romancing (Jessie gets involved with a handsome young Romanian and Ki the aforementioned assassin), and more creepy happenings as the supposed werewolves strike again and again.

Now, any sane thinking reader knows it CAN'T be a werewolf. But damn if the author of this entry (I'd love to know who it was!) goes all out to try and convince us that it is a supernatural enemy. Even Jessie starts to doubt before the end.

We have great characters, with the elder of the village being an obstacle they can't easily convince to their side, that red-headed assassin turning into a more complicated foil for Ki, and all the other side characters who add to the proceedings.

Then we have great action, with several gruesome wolf attacks and a finale that pulls out all the stops. Ki gets to go into unarmed combat against an unbelievable adversary, Jessie gets to play hero in the village, and the villagers learn to throw aside their crippling superstition to save their people and their land. It's honestly inspiring.

Just another fantastic entry in what is shaping up to be a legendary series for me.
