A personal coverage of the invasion & taking of Iwo Jima by a doctor who had to treat the cases as well as handle the circumstances thrown at him by the military brass and his own men when they stepped out of line - all related with a calmness that belies the horrors surrounding him. A very truthful account of war- the medical treatment is described in a plain way and not sensationally- the writer is compassionate, protective of his corpsmen & litter-bearers - handling problems as they arise when supplies are low or men are cracking up or going outside regulations or cannot get along with each other- standing up for them when they are asked to give too much- a chief strength is his ability to describe his fellow soldiers & officers. Very readable and recommended.
