A programmer's wife is abducted from her home under suspicious circumstances. The only clues are a missing kitchen knife and some blurry security cam footage. It is up to Julian Mercer and his team to identify the kidnapper and negotiate the woman's release. However, things don't go as planned.
The kidnapper is methodical and careful. He only wants one thing in exchange for the woman, but obtaining it will be nearly impossible. Forced to make some hard decisions, Mercer and his team must split up, but it's uncertain if they'll succeed or if someone will betray them.

The Alexis Parker series: 1) Likely Suspects 2) The Warhol Incident 3) Mimicry of Banshees 4) Suspicion of Murder 5) Racing Through Darkness 6) Camels and Corpses 7) Lack of Jurisdiction 8) Dying for a Fix 9) Intended Target 10) Muffled Echoes 11) Crisis of Conscience 12) Misplaced Trust 13) Whitewashed Lies 14) On Tilt 15) Purview of Flashbulbs 16) The Long Game 17) Burning Embers 18) Thick Fog 19) Warning Signs 20) Past Crimes 21) Sinister Secret 22) Zero Sum 23) Buried Alive 24) Trouble Brewing
Very good story and plot and I like the characters but a bit too much reflection on the death of Michelle by Julian Mercer which happened before this book and even the first book in the series was ever written. Yes , it disturbs him to lose his wife so violently but parts of this book were overkill ,I thought in terms of continuing the present storyline. It is for the above reason I only gave it 4 stars.
Really interesting kidnapping story, with a computer code as ransom. The boys get caught up in more than a straightforward case because the ransom is something they have to steal, and the captors are well hidden.
Many layers get uncovered throughout, little secrets that could help, plus stonewalling from the company that hires them, then calls the cops every time they show up to see their client. Unexpected twists make it a great read.
Love all the team members, but Bas is best, though I liked hearing more about Donovan and Hans. Julian is always an interesting character to read, very complex.
The team is called to a small area by the Trial Corporation's Insurance company to negotiate the release of an employee*s wife who had been .kidnapped. It took the team a while to get the truth and all the information they needed. They finally get a lead and Julian set up a meet with Alpha to trade the information for Sarina. Julian is captured, tortured and shot before he and Sarina are rescued. The team and the couple are in a safe house trying to figure why Alpha had shot Omega and who had shot Alpha and left him in the tunnels. Julian figures it all out in the end and they leave for a holiday.
As an aside - there are no spoilers in this review.
The writing, pace, and characters were up to G. K. Parks’ normal high standards. The loss of a star was due to the erratic behavior of some of the ancillary characters and I thought that the surprise villain was obvious fairly early on.
That said, I’ve already finished Parks’ Alexis Parker’s series and I intend to continue reading everything this author has written.
I have read all 27 of the full length Alexis Parker books twice, and I have read all 10 of the Liv DeMarco series twice. I have read the Alexis Parker prequel trilogy once. This is the second book in the Julian Mercer series. Alexis Parker has not shown up in this series yet. The Julian Mercer series has 4 former SAS operatives. They are mainly working to get kidnapped victims back. The 2 books in have read so far have been interesting.
OMG. This is a really great thriller. This book keeps you in suspense up till the very end. It is great. I highly recommend this book. This book was so much better than book one. Can't wait to read book three.
I enjoy writers style of suspense with action and believability. Fluid reading which makes you wanting more. I am a series junkie and ready to start book 3.
