The brainy and infuriatingly fun-to-solve problems that have kept the best Russian math and physics students biting their pencils as far back as the time of the czars.
An excellent collection of Russian science and engineering puzzles used by the famous MIT Concourse program. A former Concourse member recommended this book to me, and I am glad I discovered it. A warning - this is not your father’s casual sudoku book : many of the puzzles require at least a quick review of freshman physics and some understanding of calculus. Overall, an excellent distraction from pandemic blues.
Honestly, this book took me by surprise! Through asking simple questions that relate to our everyday life, it encourages readers to think more deeply into the physics that underpin natural phenomena. Although some questions can be confusing at times, most of them are short and most importantly fun to attempt. They are serve to exercise the readers' scientific minds, testing them whether they can apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations. I often find myself stuck on simple questions, but peering into the solutions has opened up new ways of thinking which also prompts me to look at areas of interest that I have never come across before. Solid read!
