not the worst book i've read on french communism - at least it treats it as its own independent phenomenon and not a puppet of moscow (mostly). i thought the chapter on counter-community was most interesting, and there was a decent level of detail to the arguments.
however, most of the book felt like an echoing of what annie kriegel has already written, but with a doubling down on the 'people only turn to communism out of protest/desperation' line. as well, the idea that the bolsheviks acted entirely as a clandestine group of professional revolutionaries has been well challenged in the 50 odd years since this was written.
