Shalla Gray

When Shalla was 11 her life goals were: to have a garden full of horses, to have eleven kids and to write and illustrate children's books. She saw sense by the fourth child, but her other dreams came true eventually, although by a circuitous route. She wrote her first book for children when she was 15, on a rainy camping holiday in Kinloch Rannoch. The book was Charlotte the Sheep, which 25 years later became Shalla's first published book. She also runs a village shop and post office in South-West Scotland, and is the Director of Curly Tale Books, an independent publisher of books for children set in the heart of Galloway.

Picked up this little picture book while on vacation in Scotland. Shalla Gray has written and illustrated this sweet little story about a sheep who follows the farmer who has shorn her wool and taken it away in his truck. She is curious to know what he is going to do with it We follow along as Charlotte the sheep travels over mountains and moorlands, through forests and towns and through the changing seasons. We watch as her shorn body grows back it's wooly coat. A "yarn" for all ages. A story to be shared. I feel this picture book would be best read aloud, but can certainly be savored through quiet, independent reading. The illustrations are lovely and I certainly felt I was back in Scotland while turning the pages of this book.
