Special Snowflake Syndrome: The Unrecognized Personality Disorder Destroying the World
In an increasingly contentious political and cultural landscape, Dr. Heather Silvio focuses on and offers solutions to the negative impact of extremes on all sides.
Dr. Silvio asks the tough questions about the growing segment of society that:
• expresses incredible entitlement
• acts out when they don’t get their way
• seems determined to make the world conform to them and their preferences, no matter the cost.
In her groundbreaking book, Dr. Heather Silvio develops the first clinical guidelines and treatment for Special Snowflake Syndrome and provides penetrating social commentary on the impact of this debilitating disorder. More than a derisive or humorous description of bad behavior, acting like a “special snowflake”, as Dr. Silvio compellingly argues, is symptomatic of an unrecognized personality disorder destroying the world.

Do you have a special snowflake in your life? Are you sick and tired of the war on Starbuck's cups and Halloween costumes? How about the unjustified bullying on social media toward people who happen to voice a difference of opinion? In a world of self-proclaimed social justice warriors and million-mom marchers, it's becoming more and more intimidating to simply voice a perspective that might happen to be different from that of the people around you.
In Special Snowflake Syndrome, Dr. Heather Silvio outlines the exact makings of a special snowflake, how their unrecognized social disorder wreaks havoc on the freedom of expression, and what to do when encountering someone who exhibits such unflattering and ultimately harmful behavior. It's a timely read, and Silvio goes through countless current examples of gross overrides to free speech, providing ample evidence that psychologists need to take a serious look at this as-yet unclassified mental illness sweeping the nation.
Does it sound like heavy reading? It isn't. I finished the book in an afternoon. Silvio has an unmistakable gift for drawing in her readers with her sophisticated and intelligent, yet equally entertaining voice. This isn't a book meant to scare or alarm anyone. If you've come this far, you already know of the danger of the special snowflake. You just might not have known that professionals like Silvio are hearing and seeing exactly what you've been witnessing all along. Finally, someone is willing to stick their neck out and say, "Hey, something's not right here!"
Even if the illness laid out by Silvio never makes its way into the annals of behavioral science, reading this book will make you even more adept at identifying this unfortunate trait every time it rears its arrogant, narcissistic, entitled, little head. And maybe finally we'll have the wherewithal to stop it in its tracks before it permanently stifles the free exchange of ideas.

A timely book in this new age of "trigger warning" and "safe spaces", Special Snowflake Syndrome clearly defines for the first time from a psychological perspective the symptoms of this new personality disorder. The book is not political as many might assume. Interspersed throughout the book are real-work examples ripped from the headlines and the author's unique sense of humor. A good read with clear and concise argument. Bonus points for being the first to lay out the clinical guidelines for Special Snowflake Syndrome.

This book is spot on. It would be an enlightening read for an open minded 'snow flake'.

Special Snowflake Syndrome: The Unrecognized Personality Disorder Destroying the World by Heather Silvio is a book that deals with Snowflake Syndrome. It is well written and keeps your interest about what has become part of our everyday language. What is a Snowflake and what is Special Snowflake Syndrome are explained in the book. I liked that she provides an answer on how to deal with this as well as giving guidelines and a clinical treatment program. It is a book that is worth reading just for the insight provided on a disorder that is unrecognized and is destroying the world by not being logical.
