Hermit on Mars Colonization Book 3

Rate this book
A call for help sends Sig into the Tartarus Mountains of Mars. Delivering repair parts to his mother offers a temporary escape from his miserable life in the colony, but there are dangers in her cavern and on the surface of the hostile Red Planet he hadn't expected.

The Big Project is conquering the Martian landscape with Sig's robots but his own life's falling apart. Frustrations in the lab and clashes with his partner leave him despondent. Now, both love and peril await him among the miners who live in the cavern and explore the surrounding mountains for rare crystalline minerals. Rogues steal Sig's rider - his way home - and since no one's ever seen the Hermit, blind trust in his life support systems could be deadly.

Join Sig exploring rugged mountains under Martian moons and daring the strange dunes of the Amazon Plain. He's going to save his mother and the others who live in the cavern whether they accept his help or not. Provided he survives.

Colonizing Mars belongs to today's headlines from NASA, Mars One, The Mars Society, SpaceX, and others. Follow the growing excitement for discovery and exploration away from the early fantasies of Edgar Rice Burroughs to Ben Bova [The Grand Tour Mars], Kim Stanley Robinson [Red Mars], and Andy Weir [The Martian]. To Kate Rauner's On Mars series - a colony you might live in someday.

Kate Rauner is a retired Cold War Warrior. She worked for over twenty years at the Rocky Flats Plant, once part of the nation's nuclear weapons complex. She helped decommission the site, which is now a National Wildlife Refuge.

Kate moved to southwest New Mexico and worked at the copper mines around Silver City, including the historic Santa Rita mine. Santa Rita has been mined since Native Americans collected copper there before the Spaniards entered Mexico.

Today she lives outside Silver City on the edge of the Gila National Forest with her husband and cat. She enjoys hiking and bird-watching, and, as a volunteer firefighter, has fought wildland and home fires. "I'm well on my way to my life's goal," Kate says. "To become an eccentric old woman."

Another solid installment in the Mars colony series.

This one is really cool from an anthropological perspective. As the first humans break away from AI control and the rigid structure of their forebearers, we get to see an emergent society that must, in some ways, resemble the social dynamics of early human tribes.

The main character, Sig, is in a later stage of life this book, with his kinderen children grown and leaving the nest. I've really enjoyed the format of these books and the diversity of characters so far. We get a second perspective too, from his mother, whose wisdom and vigor made her my favorite.

Like the books before, the writing trends towards the technical. If you are interested in geology or mechanics, you may enjoy hearing the specifics of how Martian people work and live. There are fun bonuses at the end, where extra explanations and other odds and ends go. Very little is said about Earth this time, except that they still communicate, so presumably they haven't blown themselves up yet.

I was disappointed the ending didn't resolve more tightly. I wanted to see what Sig decided to do with his life, but at least the end was basically happy. If you've read the first Colony on Mars books, you will like this one too.
