As a person who reads over 600 books a year I am constantly looking for new authors. Reading short story compendiums is an easy way to see whether or not I bond with a writer's style and character development. It also takes me back 60+ years to high school when we would read short works to acquaint us with an author. As with all collections my feelings about the individual tales vary from love to hate. Henry James - never again. More: Stephen Crane, Katherine Anne Porter, James Thurber, Eudora Welty, Carson McCullers, James Baldwin. These are, of course, not recent authors, but that does not mean that I cannot find a world of joy in reading more of their work. Kristi & Abby Tabby
It took a long time to read. I have no idea what happened in the The Beast in the Jungle, Henry James. My favorite story was The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson. I read some of the stories when I was at Foothill College.
