I came by Angela Roberts novel 'The Fear of Flying Club' because it was published by Pillar International Publishing who have also just published a book of mine, so I was curious about Angela's work. I found myself laughing out loud several times, and I can tell you for certain that I'm not a 'lol' person. But actually, Angela is not only a very observant writer, but I feel she must be a very funny woman and this shows clearly in her writing; she can conjure up some vivid and beautifully funny moments.
The characters in the book are all strongly defined and so believable that you feel you could bump into them on the street. There is a huge amount of empathy and kindness in this book as well, and I found myself really liking that fact and into the bargain it's a pleasingly structured book. However, there was a certain moment, about 20% away from the actual ending that I thought would've been a better ending, but then I think that about 90% books I read - literary or genre.
I really think 'The Fear of Flying Club' could be made into an excellent film similar in sentiment and tone to 'The Full Monty' or 'The Commitments,' and I hope that a film maker does pick it up. Or, it would be terrific as a series on TV. I also hope that Angela writes another novel, and keeps on going and maybe develops a distinct style of telling a story so that you know before you've read the title that you're reading an Angela Roberts novel.
