I was first introduced to this author with her Bloodmark Saga trilogy books. I could not read those books fast enough. I have known people close to me that have died from cancer. My sister has three boys and a girl, so I think it is important to teach them about different things in the world. The author did a very good job with this book. It can be read by all. What I really appreciated was the fact that the author made the book experience interactive by allowing the child reading to be engaged and be part of the story.
This book helps to show children that it is ok to talk about cancer as well as the fact that there will be bad days. Yet, that person in this case, Mama will always love you. There are fun things as well in this book like making a cape or other projects that families can do together as part of this book. The author provides the link to the site at http://themamavillage.com/mamasknight where children can find the instructions to the different projects featured in this book. After reading this book, children will be a little less scared of cancer.

Families coping with cancer will find this book invaluable. It’s an interactive book designed to be personalized with children’s names and family pictures, and includes activity plans, and cute, colorful pictures to help a mother with cancer explain treatments and symptoms with their young ones.
I especially liked the idea of coupons the kids can fill out choosing who will help them with an activity when mother is too tired or ill to participate. This is just one of many helpful ideas.
I can honestly say I’ve never come across a book like this before. Very helpful and one of a kind.
I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

Received a copy in exchange for review. Opinions are my own and voluntary.
Review will be posted for the book tour, but if you are a mother who is suffering with cancer and has children buy this book. It is a powerful book that I think will help your kiddo cope and may help you too.

Mama's Knight is a beautiful book. It provides a loving way to help a young child understand what is happening to a parent who is fighting cancer. Written by a mother (with a young child) who has suffered the loss of her own mother through cancer, this book fulfils a need for those families who are fighting cancer and want to empower their children during this difficult time.
Mama's Knight is an interactive book that will later become a book of memories. My 12 year-old son and I looked through every page carefully. I told him to imagine he was a little younger and I was fighting cancer. Would this book help? After turning the last page I could see my son was touched. "This is a really good book, Mom," he said. We both agreed we had never read anything like it.
We discussed how the information about cancer that the author included was appropriate for young children. We loved the clever expressions included to help children (or anyone) understand the symptoms and emotions this illness could bring out, such as "mad as a wet hen" or irritated as a goat". The activities included were fun and easy to do. And we could see how doing them together would make parent and child bond in a special way during this time.
My son and I thought the illustrations were perfect: simple and colorful pictures of people and families from different nationalities. The book is honest in the way it deals with all aspects of what it means to fight cancer, from the treatment plan to feeling scared. But it reinforces and boldly expresses a mother's love for her child and how that child is a shining knight that helps her fight strong.
This book should be known by Cancer Associations so that they can recommend it as a toolkit for mothers of young children who are fighting cancer. However, if a person is fighting cancer without the conventional methods (radiation, chemo) but is using integrative medicine, this book may still be adapted. Actually, I can see this book's format being used to create a series of books using Whittet's toolkit method written for various illnesses, including diabetes, AIDS, depression and stroke.
Kudos to Aurora Whittet for providing this beautiful tool for mothers and their children! My son and I were impressed and we highly recommend it for families who would benefit from it.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy. I willingly chose to read and post an honest review.

Mama's Knight A Cancer Story of Love by Aurora Whittet I would give this book 1000 stars if I could. As a cancer survivor this book is very special to me. My children were not small but were still young when I battled my cancer. I wish this book had of been round to share with them. The book will make a child feel special during a horrible time in their families life. The book is also kind of like a log, that you fill out. The Child is knighted as on the first pages. So they have a special place in the journey.
The story is from a Mama with cancer to their special Knight. To give them love and support as well as helping them to understand the battle. I cried while reading this book and am crying again as I write this. Cancer is a horrible time for anyone and their families. Children especially since they want to help but cannot.
Aurora Whittet has done an amazing job with this book. She can help so many families with her special story and by making every child feel special. This will also help the Mama's by giving them a way of helping them help their child through their harrowing journey.

What a clever, insightful and profound book! This book goes beyond creative!.. It is create to personalize each page. There is places for the child's name, picture, "likes", specific treatment plan, symptoms, what makes him/her happy, a chart of activities, favorite recipes, and so much more!
Although it is primarily written for the child whose mother is diagnosed with Cancer, it would equally be effective in helping him/her deal with a sibling or himself/herself who is having to endure the treatments and possible loss of "the Battle".
The illustrations, also by author, are beautifully done in bright watercolors. The hard book cover and heavier pages are of fantastic quality. This would definitely be a book kept for a lifetime and remembrance for family records.
This is definitely a Five Star rated book for children ages 2-11

Not sure how I truly feel about this kids intended book. Hard to simplistically categorize each child or person’s reactions to illnesses.

Through fun activities, sweet illustrations and a lot of love, this book helps kids to understand what their mothers', who have been diagnosed with cancer, are up against and how they can stand at her side as a knight in shining armor.
From beginning to end, this book radiates caring and warmth. It starts with the cute cover, is felt in the pages and carries through until the very end. Unlike many books, which deal with cancer and kids, this isn't a 'how to' which gives directions to parents, caretakers or third parties, but rather this book dives right in to a core issue. Kids know when something's up with their moms and these pages steer exactly in this direction.
The illustrations are wonderful and a treat. Kids can flip through them even by themselves. But my favorite part is the activities. They help bring the communication to a level kids understand best, and in the process, strengthen the bond with their moms. The more playful approach doesn't scare young listeners/readers away and helps them deepen their understanding of the situation, while helping mom's deal with a proper way to bring things across.
The wording and layout of the book show thoughtfulness and experience with kids. It's easy for the intended audience to grasp and get involved in. There's never a sense of being preachy, but rather the books strengthens kids, giving them the feel that they do have an influence in things.
Like all books of this nature, this isn't necessarily fitting for all kids but should be looked through by the mom first to make sure it handles things in a way she feels comfortable with. But I definitely recommend grabbing this one up, and see it as an extraordinary aide.

A short story that is fun, wide-opening and emotional
My Mama and I both loved reading this book. I know that other kids will also love reading it too. First the illustrations or drawings looked so artistic and beautiful. It is full of fun activities that families can enjoy creating memories and have fun. There are helpful links for you and your kids to check and follow. My Mama and I both loved everything about the book. It is wide-opening when cancer happened to one of your families or relatives. It is very emotional and my Mama cried reading the book especially on the last page.
My Mama told me that she wishes she read this book before and brought to the Philippines with us when we had our vacation. My Aunt J had a breast cancer. I know that it will help my cousins understand when my Aunt J is dealing with cancer before. I know that it will be easy for my cousins to understand and very helpful when I read and shared this book to them. Definitely, we will bring this book with on our next vacation to the Philippines.
My Mama said there is no cure about cancer yet but there is prevention. My Mama said one is by going to the doctor regularly for a check-up. I know that my Mama is afraid to go to her mammogram but she said she will face her fear and brave for us to stay healthy. I know cancer is deadly but reading this book will help you and your kids create memories that will last a lifetime.
My Mama thinks that this is the best book we both read on how to deal with cancer. We both recommend it to every kids especially if there Mama or relatives is dealing with the same health problems.

My interest in reading this book is because I have known so many people fighting cancer including my cousin-in-law. Several of the people I know have young children and frankly, it is scary enough for an adult, but for a child it is almost too much. Kids are curious and as with many things in life, I think it is great to have books that help explain things on a child's level.
This book puts the explaining cancer and its symptoms in very simple terms, to me almost too simple, but then again, it is hard to explain to anyone much less a kid. This book is not written though to share, this is written to personalize to an individual child. For example, there is a page that has activities that could be done by a "helper" when Mom is too sick. Yet, another has a page for photos of fun times together when Mom could do things with an individual child. There are very few pages to actually explain the illness itself. In essence, this book really is more of a self-help book.
The illustrations are minimal and okay but not overly fantastic.
Overall, the book is intended to be an individuals love for her child and to help her child through what Mom is going through and for that it is great! As a book for children in mass, it is just okay.
3 stars from me.

Mama’s Knight: A Cancer Story of Love is a hand-holding journey book for a mother diagnosed with cancer to walk her child through what he/she doesn’t understand about the disease. It is full of pages the mother can fill out about what kind of treatment she’s taking, how it may effect her, and explaining that sometimes she won’t be able to play with the child even though she wants to.
The book also includes a chart where the child (and mother, for that matter) can point out what they are feeling that day; if it’s “Fierce as a Dragon” or “Terrified as a Bug”, and a chart full of activities for the mother and child to do together when she may not be feeling her best.
The illustrations are cute little dragons kids, and moms in watercolors. The characters are also diverse; boys and girls of many ethnic backgrounds portrayed so a child wouldn’t feel left out of the book.
The book does use the words ‘butt’ and ‘farts’, for the parents who try to steer their children away from those words. Also, for mamas with multiple children I can see this being a bit difficult to use even if buying a book per child, because near the end the author states, “you are my favorite” in a paragraph.
Overall, Mama’s Knight: A Cancer Story of Love is a good book for a mother to have along side her as she tries to explain to a small child what she is going through and why. It would also be a great keepsake for the child no matter the outcome of the mother’s battle with cancer.

Do you know someone with young children who is suffering from cancer? Maybe even, you yourself? This book is an amazing way to bond with your young child while explaining a bit about cancer and its effects on your lives. It was much more than I expected, and very interactive. There is a place to attach a photo of your child and add their name, along with their favorite things. The illustrations are colorful and attractive. You can also include your treatment plan and it even has a pattern to make your own super hero cape (for you and your child)!
This book allows the child to share his feelings. It also gives you the opportunity to share your treatment choices and the side effects the cancer can cause, in a way that they can relate to and understand. There are ideas for making up stories together, recipes for "gag-proof" food and an activity center for those blah days when you don't feel like doing much. There are coupons, and places for pictures as well as a journal for Adventures with Mama.
I was impressed with this book. And although I am not struggling with cancer myself, I think this book would be an amazing asset for a mom who is.
I received a free copy of this book from iReadBookTours to review. A positive review was not required and all opinions are my own.

I thought this book was absolutely adorable and a great gift for a child and mother who are on the journey of cancer together.
The illustrations in the book are amazing. It is an easy read for children. I found it to be comforting in both the illustrations, words, and the phrases.
There are activities throughout the book, along with links to find more or get printables.
It is a customizable book with places to write things in and add pictures.
As a parent, I felt it is a book that will bring comfort to a child, but also serve as a memory keeper for a child. It reminds the child that mommy is sick, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t love the child and that while she may not like the smell of her favorite food or able to do activities; it doesn’t mean she doesn’t love the child.
It really is a cute book perfect for a mom and child who are on the journey of cancer together. Highly recommend.

I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
Mama’s Knight is a wonderful book that I wish never had to be written. It’s a guide for parents and their children when Mom is diagnosed with cancer. What makes it special is that it not only explains to children what may happen but it is also personalized.
The illustrations are cute and colorful and the text is simple enough for children to understand what is going on with their mom.
It’s never easy to talk about cancer, especially to children, but Mama’s Knight is a great tool to open that conversation. It also has activities for the child and parent to do, so it can be used over and over as a resource for activity ideas. And what a great keepsake for children!
Themamavillage.com is listed at the end of the book and is a website that has love and support for Mom.

Mama's Knight is a truly beautiful story for Mom and child that brought tears to my eyes. The book showcases Mom's battle with cancer in an easy way for children to understand but still hits on the most important parts: that Mom may be tired, Mom may not be able to play and sometimes Mom may not like the same types of foods. The book starts out with a background about the child (that you would personalize for your own child) and then dives into the symptoms Mom may be having and how cancer affects her body and her treatment plan.
What I love the most is that the book gives activities to play when Mom is having a bad day, coupons for special days with just Mom and links to activities, like making a cape for your special super hero. The book has the ability to be personalized (which all kids love!) and even better there are parts where Mom can make notes and even insert photos of Mom and child. I loved the section about talking about feelings, as children can find it hard to express their feelings and this is a great starting point for them. She gives children the starting line (for example: "Today I am as angry as a goose") and this allows Mom and child to explore these feelings and help address them and work through them.

This is a beautiful well written story. It is an emotional story and topic when it comes to cancer. I have lost loved ones from cancer I do know it is hard to go through my husband's mom has breast cancer and is doing treatments again for her second time around. But she is a strong fighter.
This is a good book for child and parents to have especially if they don't know what it really means. It's a good tool to have for when you talk to your child about cancer.
Having this book for your children is a good idea to have so they won't be to shy or scared to talk about cancer. There are also some fun activities in this book as well to do with your children.
Recommend to parents who have young children. This is a great way to help your child to not be scared of cancer.

Mama's Knight is an amazing and interactive book created especially for mothers who are battling cancer and have young children. It is a unique combination of a story, scrapbook and activities that is completely customizable. Mom's are able to fill in the child's name, their treatment plan and what will make them feel better and when read with their child, the child is turned into their mother's Knight and given all the empowerment to help their mom when they are not feeling their best. Mama's Knight is written using clear, honest and simple language about cancer, the medicines used and its effects. I love that children are encouraged to make a cape for themselves and mom to be superheroes, there is also an activity to discuss feelings and make a silly story. There are sections for mom to fill in for 'Gag-Proof Recipes' and a special secret just for their child. Overall, this is a book that promotes love and acceptance and is something to be cherished; while I wish that it did not have to exist, Mama's Knight provides a wonderful tool for those warrior mama's with cancer and their brave children, no matter what the outcome.

Mama's Knight helps parents find the right words. Sometimes, parents simply don't realize just how much children understand at even young ages. Sometimes, parents are just not sure how to talk about certain subjects--especially the illness of a parent or close family member or friend. This book helps parents find the right words to talk to their children about some of the many aspects of cancer and cancer treatment--and the health and symptoms of the sick parent. The book may be a good starting point to begin the difficult conversation about what the family may expect as Mom faces cancer--and it is also one to revisit again and again throughout the cancer fight .
Mama's Knight is a combination storybook / activity book / memory book. When I initially agreed to review this book; I was expecting a storybook that simply discussed cancer at a child's level to offer coping ideas and an understanding. This book is SO much more than that. Every page is open for personalization--in Mom's writing--so that she can share her personal feelings and address her family's unique personal needs. Family dynamics vary greatly from family to family--and Mom's role may be very different as well. This book lets Mom (and the family) create their own memory book--essentially their personal cancer story of love--through all of the personal writing prompts and activities.
Would I recommend Mama's Knight by Aurora Whittet? There are many books available to explain a cancer diagnosis to children--but, I have not seen one quite like this before. This book isn't meant to tell a story of coping and survival--it's meant to help the family create their own story. It's a great guide through the ups and downs of cancer--and offers very well rounded guidance toward explaining some of the whys and hows and addressing the needs of children during the cancer survival journey. While parents worry so often about helping their children through these life events--this book also reminds us that children want to help Mom feel better. They want ways to help Mom be a healthy, active Mom again. I would certainly recommend this book to any family with young children facing a parent's cancer diagnosis. This book is geared toward a Mom suffering from cancer--and I would love to see it developed for Dads or other family members or friends. I think it's a wonderful book to help families during a very difficult time.
I received a copy of this book from the author or publisher. All opinions are my own.

Cancer is a dreaded word for any person. For a parent, it is still tougher as he/ she cannot imagine how their family and children will get impacted by their ill health. This book is a support and aid for cancer survivors and their families.
First of all, I was amazed when I read the book blurb. I appreciate the author as she took a very sensitive subject and created a story for young children which is positive.
Did you ever think, how a parent who is a cancer patient will reveal about her health to their children? How he/ she might feel when they are going through pain themselves and have to take care of kids also? How they can give information to young children in a way they understand at the same time doesn't panic about treatment and disease symptoms? Can the young children understand this properly? How the kids might feel to see her mother's bald head after the treatment and will they be confused to see her mother tired whole day instead of running behind them to play? This book is an answer to all these questions. This is to prepare their children that it is like any other disease which has to be fought by taking proper treatment. The final message is that love wins always and it gives strength to fight anything in this world. How sweet :-)
The book covers the treatment options for cancer(a brief explanation), the symptoms, the impact, the mood swings of a patient while taking the treatment etc., This book also covers the activities that a parent can do with children even while taking rest. There are some fun activities listed in the book and the author gave a link to find out more about the activities on the web. This book is interactive with space to write children's name and stick their family photos.
Overall, it is a very inspiring and informative book. I recommend this book to children above 6 years of age.
My Rating: 4.5/5
PS: I have received a free book in exchange of my review and this is my honest opinion on the book.

My Review: 5/5
What a fabulous and special book! When families are faced with terminal illness, communication can be hard…especially when children are involved. I’ve been fortunate enough to not have to deal with cancer myself, or my spouse; however, I know of a number of mothers (and fathers) who have been stricken with it and have little children. How do you explain to a child that you don’t have enough energy to play, eat dinner, or even get out of bed? How is a young and innocent child supposed to understand? This book can help explain what is happening (in a fun way), while also reinforcing just how special, strong, and LOVED the child is.
Two years ago, my mother developed lung cancer and survived. Even though I was a 40-year old ‘child’, it was difficult to understand exactly what she was going through. I couldn’t imagine if the same circumstance occurred when I was younger.
This book helps bridge the communication gap between mothers and their children who are dealing with cancer. The illustrations are colorful and add so much to the story. It deals with the issue in an informative, creative, and fun way. I have so many favorite parts, but I especially loved the games and activities included. There is a page devoted to helping the child express their emotions. (My 10 year old commented how much she liked that page too, because it can be used in all sorts of traumatic events, such as when her father and I divorced.) There is a website included at the bottom of the activity pages where more ideas are listed which is also great. When a parent is ill, it is so difficult to do certain things when there is zero energy. The activities add an alternative of spending time together, without requiring exertion.
My only complaint (and I wouldn’t even call it a complaint) would be that the book only focuses on a mother dealing with cancer, and not a father. I understand why, but I think it would have been even better if it was gender neutral, from a mom or a dad’s point of view. Perhaps another book can be written for fathers and children?
My maternal grandmother died from cancer when my mom was only 9 years old. She has told me stories of the last six months of her mom’s life, with her sitting on the hospital bed with her…her mom at a loss for words. She started crying when she read this book. She told me this book would have been absolutely perfect for when she was younger and her mom was sick. Her mom could have used to bring them closer together at the end and help them spend the last precious moments understanding.
A great read, and a book I very highly recommend!
