Becca thought she was happy. She's been with her husband Martin so long it rarely occurs to her that there could be any other way; her fourteen-year-old daughter is growing up to be confident and clever; and she has an unusually good relationship with her parents. But when her mother announces that she's leaving Becca's father, suddenly everything changes. Becca's in freefall, as everything she thought was certain is slipping away. When Martin becomes too preoccupied with training for the marathon to listen to her concerns, Becca is drawn, dangerously, to a man who has no right to pursue her.... Whether her marriage will survive or not, Becca's woken up, and she's never going to be quite the same woman again.
I remember loving Sarah Duncan's A Single to Rome and Kissing Mr Wrong, and it's rather a shame it took me so long to get round to reading this earlier one by her. This was really excellent - Becca's an English teacher at a private school, in her early 40s, struggling with a range of everyday family problems. She decides to join a drama group and gets a part in a Restoration drama - something to do while her husband trains for his marathon - and finds herself wrestling with an unexpected challenge to her marriage. This isn't some fluffy chick lit, Becca's thoughts and concerns are yours and mine, and her family, friends and other people she encounters are very real. A really heartwarming + enjoyable read with a feelgood ending - highly recommended for the more mature chick lit reader.
This book is set in Bath and it is around a Woman contemplating an affair. The woman does pull back from the man and sorts out her maritl affairs. It has a really happy ending, which I was glad about. I wouldnt buy this book though to be honest.
