Darren Taylor is an all-state defensive end on one of the top teams in Houston. Only football promises to take him away from his gang-filled neighborhood in Houston's Third Ward. But during a preseason scrimmage, Darren tears up his right shoulder, taking him out for the season. The sudden uncertainty sends Darren into a spiral, leading to an addiction to pain pills that threatens to end his football career--and, maybe, his life.
Texas Fridays Houston is a book based around an athlete (football player) at sunnyside academy in Houston, TX; Specifically the Third Ward. The book just tells a story over the span of two weeks about a season ending injury, and his brother going to prison. His brother (marquis) is the drug lord of the third ward
I gave the book a 4/5 because i could relate to a lot of the struggles and the problems he was stressed about. I'm not saying im from the hood or anything but i mean i could relate to the football stuff, like worrying about an offer, and injuries and everything else that comes with the dream of playing college football. The only reason i didnt give it a 5/5 was because it ended kind of abruptly.
Personal Response: Texas Fridays Houston was an enjoyable book to read. It was about a high schooler on the football team going through troubles in his life. When I started to read the book I thought it would be boring but once you get into it you don't want to stop.
Plot Summary: The main character was named Darren, Darren was the best defensive player they had on the team. Darren was so good that he got two scholarships from colleges. Darren ended up getting hurt during the team's scrimmage and had to sit out of practice and even school. Darren was given oxys from the doctor to get rid of the pain, But he got addicted to them instead. Darren looked everywhere to find some. Darren's brother Marquis found out about his addiction and knew he had to do something. Marquis quit the gang life to keep Darren on track to become a professional football star.
Recommendation: I recommend this book to anyone who likes football. If you are looking for a short story that makes you want to keep reading it you should read this book. If you like books about football and drugs this is the book to read.
Student Name: Cody Steinbach Date Submitted: May 8 Book Title: Texas Fridays Houston Lexile:810
Personal response: I personally think the book is really short and down to earth. It talks about real-world problems that people face throughout their lives and from those hardships they make decisions that will affect them and their families lives forever. Some of those hard decisions deal with drugs and how Darren might not get a scholarship because of his drug addiction.
Plot summary: This book is about a boy named Darren Taylor and he is a really good defensive end in football. But he gets injured and he gets prescribed oxys, and Darren ends up abusing them. It gets to the point where he gets his drug dealing brother in trouble and inevitably puts his scholarship at risk when he is addicted to oxys. In the end, his brother gets put in prison so that his brother can play football.
Recommendation: I would recommend this book to most football players because one of the main points in the book is about playing football. It would relate to them more because stuff like that happens to football players. They'll get injured they'll get prescribed pain meds and sometimes end up abusing them.
Personal Response: I thought this was a great book. It expressed everything that had to do with injuries and other things. Overall, I rate this book four out of five stars.

During a preseason scrimmage, Darren tore his right shoulder and is out for the season. Will USC and Oregon still recruit him for playing college football with them? Darren is using Oxy’s to help with the pain, but something bad happens. He becomes addicted to them. Will this make matters even worse?
Recommendation: I recommend this book to whoever like action and sports. This book is full of action dealing with football and drugs. Anyone that would read this book will like it.
I think this book was really good. Some of the pros of it are story telling. it is a realistic story that could be true. From the drug dealers in the Third Ward of Houston the gun violence that happens there ties the book into real world events.
Some of the cons in it is that some parts don't have a back story to it. It is sometimes hard to see where the story perspective will go. The book setting starts in one place, but it randomly shifts to another perspective.
Overall, i rate it a 4/5 stars. it is mainly a well written book with a great story in it. it gives you a good vibe if you like the Friday night lights.
Houston (Texas Fridays) by Sam Moussavi. This is a very great told story that leaves you thinking and wondering what's next. That's why I rate it a ten. Darren is a very talented football player coming into his junior season. Darren's goal is simply to get out of his neighborhood and get a scholarship. He trains hard every day leading up to spring training. At spring training Darren is told to stay out and rest but he wants one more play. And of course, he is injured. At the hospital, he issued drugs and gets hooked. Once he begins his stay at home he begins a downward spiral and risks his only way out.
Darren older brother was in the streets called the Third Ward in Houston and decided to give up the drug life to help out Darren after a season ending injury during his senior year.
Texas Fridays Houston by Sam Moussavi, was a very good book. The book will give you vivid details about Darren Taylor’s life. I liked that the book gave details about his whole life from start to finish.
