Another Haint in the Holler

Relationships can be complicated, especially when life gets in the way. We all know this. Sometimes we only get snapshots of the full storm that is someone's love life, the jealousies, betrayals, images, and conversations. Sometimes these snapshots are more like faded film, replaying as a collection of memories captured briefly in poetry, leaving us feeling like just Another Haint in the Holler.

I finished this anthology in record time; I just couldn't put it down. When I was finished, I had to ask myself, "Am I one of the ghosts?" McVey's poetry is intimate, dangerous, and cunning. These poems dissolve the barriers between historical periods... and between lovers.

Another Haint in the Holler is an intimate, shameless window of poetry into both our time, and the past. It's deeply rooted in the Ozarks, in a way that makes you want to have your feet in the red clay while you read it. The poems are unabashedly nontraditional, and take you on waves between sharp realities and quiet wisdoms.

A few of my favorite lines - because they really resonated with my own feelings within the context of their poems - are these ones:

"Perhaps if you take simple things with you,
you're allowed to bring some meaningful things back."

"You're a twig for the branches now."

"I can't say if I held you, but I know you felt my arms."

I’m not actually a fan of poetry books in general, but having met the author, I picked it up. I couldn’t put it down until I finished it.

While not normally reading poetry, I thought I would give this a try and I was surprised by the emotion and strength in these words and in this love and in almost the world that is built by these poems. High Recommendation.
