An enjoyable book, part history, part travel guide. This is a part of the U.S. that most people don't see. If they go there at all, they go to ski at Telluride or buy Indian jewelry in Santa Fe or visit the Grand Canyon. That's only a tiny part of what's there.
This tells the story of this area, of all of it, so that you want to see so much more.

I have an old addition with these wonderful sketches (later editions might also have 'em). Great travel guide! Full of all sorts of information -- history, culture, geology, narratives, etc. Lonely Planet, travel blogs, the 'gram, all that, have nothing on this book's resourcefulness and character.

Although the title might lead you to believe this is another book by Carlos Castaneda written under yet another pseudonymn it is actually a very readable guide to some of the most interesting aspects of the SW. I read the third edition of the book prior to several travels in the 90's to the Four Corners region and that the book has gone thru five revisions since then speaks to it's longevity. I was surprised (and delighted) when I learned from a local bookseller that the author actually lives in my neighborhood not that I would know him he was standing here right now but I hope to meet him one day to let him know how much I enjoyed and valued this travel guide.

This is a great reference book for anyone traveling in the Four Corners area. It has extensive details, maps, and sketches. Even if the reader is not planning a trip to this area, the information is interesting.
