There is something about art instruction books from the 1900-1940s era. They are fantastic. I have gone through dozens and dozens of art instruction books and for some reason, the best ones are from this time period.

Published in 1935, and containing very little text, this book is mainly reference drawings by Rines with instructions on how to reproduce, what to study, and the order of which to draw the elements of his drawings. Simple but concise, I followed his instructions to the T, and was amazed by the results. This really is a better approach to pencil drawing!

The latter half of the book, he prefaces is for middle school students. I don’t know any middle school students who can draw anything in this section, but the Depression maybe brought out the most creative?

I had a fun time drawing from this book and learned a ton. I ordered another book from Rines. Good book for the intermediate pencil artist. Tip: you will need at least HB and 2B pencils for this.
