Browsing the children's section of my hometown library looking for all of my favorites from 20 years ago (and not finding them, boo) I decided to checkout the oldest looking book on the shelf. The binding on this would have looked dated to me even circa 1990, so imagine how out of place it was in a new building surrounded primarily by books published after I graduated high school. This means going in, I had no idea what the book was actually about. I was pleasantly surprised to find a quiet story of a young girl's life in the mountains of East Tennessee (same area where my mother's family is from) in the early part of the 20th century. The plot was nothing special, but I enjoyed the characters. It's a good look into Appalachia, even if a bit jarring to find mentions of an airplane flying overhead even as the main character starts school lacking shoes to wear.
I definitely thought this was a sequel to My Side of the Mountain. I was wrong. Totally different story, but a sweet story of Glory, and her adventures with her brother Matt and her former teacher/turned author, Miss Penny.
