The Bonafide family is an important part of the Jericho Black Universe, starting at Book Among Wolves and all the way through the series to the end. Go back to the beginning of this family's story to understand what makes them tick. Texas Ranger John Bonafide never thought he would get the chance to come face to face with the Japanese soldier who killed his son, but he was dead wrong. When the last drop of blood is spilled, who will be the hero and who will be the villain?
"If Jordan's first book kicked in the door, this one goes straight through the wall." -Dean Jolly/ Graphic Artist
This tale of revenge begins during the battle of Guadalcanal in World War Two. Captain Kioji Teshima of the Imperial Japanese Army, following the code of Bushido beheads his prisoner Marine Private Jack Napier Bonafide. Little does Kioji know that ten years later in South Texas he will find himself face-to-face with the Marine's Texas Ranger John Bonafide. Soon the small town of Simeon, Texas will find itself pulled into a feud that will soak Texas in blood from Simeon to Texarkana.
"A revenge drama woven around Samurai and Texas Rangers - what a brilliantly imaginative work from Jordan Vezina! The details went into the narration and character definition is so meticulous that it's like watching a movie. With lots of unapologetic twists and edgy scenes, Broken English is an absolutely gripping period revenge story." -Giju John/ Actor, Musician, Director
Jordan Vezina is a writer of historical fiction living in Palo Alto California. In a past life Jordan was an infantry Marine serving in an anti/ counter-terror unit, a bodyguard, and a personal trainer. And a website designer. And a combatives teacher. And a corporate manager. And a singer and guitar player in a blues-metal band. And then an IT guy. And then blah blah blah I'm so cool. That's right. It's me writing this.
Oh boy, where to begin? This is a fairly short introductory novelette about the background of the Bonafide family, and a less politically correct group of folks you'd be hard pressed to find. The protagonist is one John Bonafide. One of his sons is killed as a POW in WWII by a Japanese officer. Flash forward a decade to Texas and the same officer is hunted down by John's second son, with the same result. So now enters John, a hard bitten, leather tough Texas Ranger bent on avenging his sons deaths. I won't say anything further so as to not spoil it. Having read this book, I now have insights into the Bonafide men who follow John. It will make future books featuring these characters easier to follow. I liked this book even though I had problems with the morality of the main characters. I realize they were products of their times and belief systems, but I often felt it hard to empathize with them. As an action thriller though, "Broken English" is top notch.
This is a very riveting and sad story. The Bonafide family has a history of duty, honor and cruelty. An eye for an eye. Two of Texas Rangers John Bonafides sons have been killed by the same man. A former Japanese soldier. The first son was a prisoner of war and was given in Japanese culture an honorable death. The second son killed by the Japanese defending himself. Family members from both men were killed in retribution. Extremely well written.
I've read the other Bonafide books. The family are super tough, super patriots but John lacks perspective once his mind is made up about any fight he's going into. His single-minded outlook runs straight into Yioj's bushido code, and the clash of two cultures in South Texas results in tragedy on a huge scale. I understand the characters of Jack and Mac Bonifide better from later books but this story stands on its own.
This book is like a biography of a family serving in ww 1 and 2, and what happened in their lives. Lots of action, murder, and mayhem . A pretty good read.
I love the Jericho Black series from this same author and when I was given a review copy of this book, I was delighted to see he wasn't a one-hit wonder. This book is a quick read and makes you always want to get to the next page. The plot has many more twists than the summary lets on. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers, especially revenge/vigilante justice reads.
