Takatāpui - A Place of Standing

Rate this book
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Maori (takatapui) tell their stories and reflect on the journey from exclusion and prejudice to taking their rightful place in Aotearoa.
This book is overdue. It is the first book dedicated to the life and stories of takatapui, Maori of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender identities. In these pages are the vitality and aroha, the struggles and triumphs, of people who were doubly marginalised for too long.

Takatapui captures first-hand stories by LGBT Maori from all walks of life, interspersed with sumptuous photos in pages of full colour. The handsome, jacketed hardback is a fitting tribute to those who fought for their rights and can now celebrate who they are with pride.

Illustrated with stunning colour photographs, Takatapui features introductions by Wiri Ihemaira, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku and the late Henare Te Ua. Edited by Jordon Harris.

Recommended reading for everyone!! Hard to find (I had to interloan) but well worth the effort. I loved the interweaving stories, and balance of contemporary vs historic issues.

Hard to give it anything less because it is one of a kind - documenting takatāpui stories.
