"Too Hard to Forget" is a historical fiction/romance, centred around Nicole Waltham and Lord Brandon Montagu. Despite an initial rough first meeting, Nicole and Brandon meet for a second time while Nicole is working as a paid companion for Brandon's aunt. Determined to pay her own way after being abandoned by her father and fiance, Nicole is enjoying her new paid position when Brandon and his aunt provide a new proposal: Nicole is to marry Brandon a few days before his twenty fourth birthday so that he can receive his inheritance upon his twenty fifth birthday (the inheritance conditional upon him being married for a year). The two decide to marry initially for convenience, and are surprised by their growing attraction to each other.
To me, the best part of this book was definitely Nicole's character. Despite everything that she has gone through and the time period in which the book takes place, Nicole is confident and independent and dedicated to improving her own life. I wish that her backstory with her father and fiance had been better explored, and expanding on this plot would have enhanced her character even more.
Secondly, I also liked how the author stuck to the time period in which the story takes place. The descriptions of the food, the clothes, the powdered hair and the make up- all of this is important when writing in a different era, and the author did a fairly good job of this.
Despite being fond of the main character, there were a few parts of this book that I was less pleased with. First, I didn't buy in to the relationship between Nicole and Brandon- there was no real build up to their relationship, and no reason given as to why they liked each other aside from Brandon's narrative mentioning something small about how he was able to easily talk to Nicole. Without ay sort of interesting build up, their relationship lacked any sort of chemistry for me. Furthermore, the plot became a bit ridiculous and seemed to spin out of control once Nicole entered France.
Overall, this book was an interesting and quick read, and will likely be enjoyable for others who enjoy historical fiction.
