The "cult classic" of believing Christian scholarship. Maier has been a Lutheran pastor, and his expertise is in the history of Protestant biblical study on the Continent, that is, in Europe. This is a German who had the "audacity" to take on the German critical methods of biblical study, and as far as I know, the only one who did so on an academic level. Maier first gives fairly compelling reasons why these methods have ultimately failed, and then suggests the method which should take its place. He realizes the immensity of this task, and his proposals are basic and formative. Some readers might be put off by the European focus, but American Christians need to learn about this. An imperfect work, yet pivotal in reconstructing Christian theology.
