Karen came to romance early when, at sixteen, her Valentino-loving grandmother gave her The Sheik to read. Ever since that day she devoured romance in all types of genres including: historical, western, fantasy, time travel, and science fiction. It wasn’t until she started reading contemporaries that she couldn’t find the type of books she wanted to read. That’s when she thought she would try her hand at writing one herself. Her fourth book Jennifer’s Outlaw written for Silhouette Intimate Moments sold in 1995 and was published in April 1997.

Karen then went on to sell to Harlequin Blaze in 2001 and her first Blaze was released in January 2002. She’s written 12 books altogether.

Karen is proud of her two daughters whom she raised as a divorced mom for 15 years. One is launched into the world and the other is attending college. Although she misses the beautiful mountains of her home state of Vermont, Karen moved to Northern Virginia is 1981 and then to Raleigh, North Carolina in 2006.

Karen loves to paint in both watercolors and Chinese Brush painting as just another creative outlet.

This has been my favorite book this year. The action and suspense was out of this world. The heroine was kick ass, and so was the hero. The both had a crush on each other since the first time they meet. They haven’t acted on the chemistry keeping everything Plotinic. Russ was best friends with Neve’s older brother. He didn’t want to hurt their friendship if he attempted to date Tristen’s little sister.

Neve had a hit out on her. The enemy also had a hit out on everyone in Neve’s family. Everyone she loved was in danger because of her, or so she thought. She was determined to go to Panama alone, and take care of the threat. She was a trained rescue swimmer for the Coast Guard. Russ was just as determined to go with Neve. He was a retired Marine. Once a Marin always a Marine. He had the skills to protect her. Too bad he didn’t have the skills to outsmart her. While he was demanding to go, she offered him coffee. She told her story to him, while he drank. You guessed it, she had drug the coffee. She got on a plane and left, while he slept. He caught up with her in a small bar in Panama. She let the chemistry pull them together for the first time. While he kissed her, she hand-cuffed him to a bed in a room at the back of the small bar. She said she had to do this alone. She got into a bit of trouble, and welcomed his help the next time he caught up to her. I thought the action would never end. This is one of those that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Excellent book!

The heroine, Neve, is so, so stupid for the first quarter of this book. So. Stupid. She runs off to hunt down and chase an incredibly dangerous guy threatening her family, a man law enforcement agencies across the globe can't find. She thinks she, with virtually no training in combat and with very little intel about the area, can just waltz into the most remote jungle and find this guy...and then kill him. All by herself. (Like he wouldn't have a literal army protecting him. Ugh.) As if that wasn't stupid enough, she refuses to let Rock help. Rock, who is an extremely highly trained former spec ops guy who has actually been to the jungle where she needs to go. She compares the situation to her need to prove herself to her father, who didn't believe she could become a coast guard rescue swimmer. THIS IS NOT LIKE THAT AT ALL, NEVE. Proving that you are tough at your job is not the same thing as needing to head off on a suicide mission you are very clearly unprepared for. Sure enough, she's barely started her journey and she gets in serious trouble, and if Rock wasn't so set on protecting her she'd have been dead before she got anywhere. I couldn't stand her, and I couldn't stand that Rock, who seemed like a decent, smart guy, would be in love with her. Thankfully Neve does realize how stupid she was being and try to make up for it, but I couldn't never quite put the sheer irresponsibility out of my mind. Rock truly loves her and wants to settle down and have a quiet family life with her, and I just could not see Neve ever truly being happy with that. I don't know, I just wasn't convinced about their HEA completely.

But, I do love a good jungle survival story, and this had plenty of that. Things are fast paced, and I like the way some past characters from the series appear here. I love this series from Anders and thought the other books were smart and clever. This one just totally fell flat for me, mostly because of Neve.

She's got a killer after her, her family and even friends.

She learned who wanted her dead and decided to go after him, deep in the South American jungles.

Her brothers best friend, Rock, whom she's always kinda been in love with, attempts to help her.
Two different times, she foils his attempts. Once st home, and another in Panama.

The day he met her, he fell in love with her instantly that day he meet her 5 years ago, but being it was his best friends sister, he never took the chance to tell her his feelings.

But Neve, was so stubborn, leaving him in San Diego and Panama, he wasn't sure he could ever trust her again.

Neve, was hung up about being a woman and feeling like she has to overcompensate for it. She also didn't want to put Rock or her families life in jeopardy, she loved them too much.

Finally realizing that it was better to be part of a team, they learned to work together and she even let him lead as she finally understood, this had been his world!

Thanks to Amber back home they had their very own sniper following them, providing backup. And they literally all backed each other up! Thought it was cute when the black hawk came their sniper waved to them.

Loved Opal, her family and wanting to save her brother, José who was taken by the same monster after Neve. Opal was cunning and smart and it would be awesome to see her in her own story, like in 5 books. She make a killer Marine!!

This was an intense book, the love scenes were steamy, but so were the scenes intense of being in prison.

Note: the whole " they wanted different things, her to move around and him not too!" Was repeated a bit two many times for my liking. But that was my only complaint.

Looking forward to Derricks story next!

Danger appears almost immediately in the sixth To Protect and Serve book, and threats only become more unpredictable as the story progresses. Neve Michaels is on a Coast Guard search and rescue team, so she often has to take risks to save others. But when her own family is endangered because of something she did, nothing will stop the gutsy woman from protecting them, even at much cost to her. Though she is planning to work alone, one man is not willing to let her life be jeopardized regardless of what she says. Frequently at odds when it comes to decisions, these two individuals will experience a series of events where death could occur in an instant. I worried about their safety so many times, as Karen Anders takes them on a journey packed with unanticipated peril. HER ALPHA MARINE captivates with dangerous adventures and explosive conflicts.

After being injured on a rescue mission, Coast Guard swimmer Neve Michaels is eager to get back to work. While impatiently waiting for her recovery time to be over, she receives a cryptic note and then is physically attacked. During the confrontation, Neve discovers an illegal weapons dealer called White Falcon wants her and anyone close to her to suffer. Unfortunately, her brother’s best friend, Russell “Rock” Kaczewski, knows about the incident, and the former marine is determined to make sure she is protected, even though she insists his assistance is not wanted.

When Neve learns her enemy is possibly somewhere near Panama, she decides to take care of the threat on her own, thus keeping others safe. But Rock is not going to let her prevent him from helping, even if she tries to deceive him. Both are equally unyielding when it comes to reaching their goals, especially Rock as he has strong unspoken feelings for Neve. He is also a man who does not give up easily, even when someone thinks what is being done is for the best.

There is little down time in HER ALPHA MARINE, and I quickly became caught up in the many harrowing situations that Rock and Neve had to face. From the first indication of something being wrong to the last altercation, I was concerned about their future and if they would actually have the chance for a relationship. Their time in the jungle is especially demanding, as they had to fight not only various enemies but the environment as well. A jungle setting is one of my favorite locations for a suspenseful story to take place, and this couple definitely has many issues to overcome. Karen Anders has created a very realistic locale for Rock and Neve to tackle, and I felt as though I was right there with them on numerous occasions.

The couple also had to deal with around-the-clock sexual tension, and the desire each felt for the other was only waiting for one tiny spark to ignite. Rock has hid his feelings for Neve for a long time, and he is secretly ready for a more stable life. She is all about proving herself, and a few of her earlier choices are a little misguided. Yet she does come to realize the value of teamwork, and I liked seeing her work through these inner battles. There are more books coming in the To Protect and Serve miniseries, and I could not be happier.

I voluntarily reviewed the book and these comments are my honest opinion

This book was action packed from the beginning to the end. Russell (Rock) has loved Neve since he met his best friend's sister years ago. He has tried to date other women, but nothing compared to her. Neve was always attracted to Russell, but she knew they were in different places in their life and couldn't be together. When Neve and her family are threatened, Neve takes on the threat alone. Russell goes after her and they have the fight of their lives on their hands.

Loved the love story as well as the action packed thriller of a story. I felt a strong connection to the characters and loved how it all played out.

Really good romantic suspense. With the threats and unexpected encounters through the jungle looking for the White Falcon and the growing sexual tension between them, Neve and Rock have all they can handle. I fell in lust with Russell - "the bravest, most badass, scariest dude" - Hot and sexy too!

Special Agent Derrick Gunn added a whole extra layer to the story - feel pretty sure we'll be seeing more of him - can't wait!!!!

this book was action packed from the start. the romance part was a small doses in the beginning. as the book book went on the romance heated up. it was carried on thru out. the characters are believable just like any couple Russell (Rock) and Neve start out not wanting to admit they are in love.the book gives us a happily ever after plus a look forward.
