A short whimsical, somehow humorous story about siblings who befriend a ghost and try and keep the mysterious 'ghost hunter' away from him.
Of course, I watched the TV show decades ago and finally managed to order a copy to read on Christmas Day 2024.
It was, albeit, a bit too short. I would have liked more adventure and mystery in it. And what are the reasons the Ghost Hunter is what they are? Do they just hate ghosts, or is there something more to it? Luckily, it continues as a book series so I have more to catch up on.
One of my joys as a primary school teacher is reading aloud to children. To discover a book that hooks even the most reluctant reader to want more is something that warms every teacher's heart. "The Ghost Hunter" certainly fits the bill. From the first atmospheric sentence "It was the dead of the night" children are hanging on the edge of their seat to hear about Roddy's adventures with the ghost of William Povey, a lad from Victorian times. Enter Tessa, Roddy's sister and the sinister ghost hunter who sniffs out spirits to capture them and you have the perfect combination for a classic novel: children as the main characters, a laddish ghost and an evil adult.
The book zips along with just the right balance of narrative and dialogue. An 8 or 9 year old would thoroughly enjoy reading the book independently as would older struggling readers. The book is left on a cliff hanger waiting for Roddy, William and Tessa to return in "The Ghost Hunter at Chillwood Castle", the second book in the trilogy.
The Ghost Hunter was a very popular CBBC television series between 2002-2004 yet is now only available on Kindle.
