Tingley adds another dimension to the standard "assertive" approaches to conflict. She introduces a framework called "Beyond Assertiveness." This framework says that direct communication is not the pinnacle of professional communication; talented communicators use a toolbox of indirect techniques to influence others in an ethical way.
I have recommended this book to several clients already, and I just read it last week.
This is a great resource with practical, tactical advice for communicating effectively in the workplace.
Tingley combines her background as a psychologist, counselor, and Toastmaster to communicate several practical "Beyond Assertive" methods indirect influence. Her broad experience provides plenty of practical examples. Her entire approach is extremely pragmatic, with each method including a case study using a 6-step drill. Her methods include: modeling/matching, acting in accord, reframing, paradox, confusing, Columbo, storytelling, and humor.
This author's true indirect influence is what most people call "two face", "playing both sides", etc. She is disingenuous to all sides to achieve her goal, which was to get her nails done and live a "rich" person's life full of massages and wine and hair done at the best salon in town. If you are already two face and play both or all sides, skip this book.
