Rekod pembunuhan seawal 1800 sehingga 1993.

In early January, I was in search of a new book after my other choice was ruled out, so I asked for recommendations and this book caught my eye. Obviously, the title (The Chronicle of Murder) is an attention grabber, but as I flipped through it, the stories looked incredibly interesting. And so, I decided this would be a light read around the time of midyears and so many snow days, a decision I definitely made correctly.

The premise of this book is simple: murder. The book is a compiled series newspaper article in chronological order relating to murders across the United States and Europe from around 1900 to 2000, covering stories big and small. Additionally, every twenty or so pages, there were 2 full pages relating to the largest murder-related story of a certain time. These included people like Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, and even the 9/11 attacks. In each article, it includes the story, the quotes, the people involved, all the things someone would need to develop an interest in the book.

A lot of things in this book worked. I assume that when the author wrote it, they took into account that people could not read a whole story that could take up 3, maybe 4 pages, so, on average, there is around 1 and 1/2 per page. An effective strategy to keep people interested, this also makes it easy to read and not be cut off in the middle at all. You can almost always finish the stories you start easily because of the length of them. Recognizing that these are smaller stories, not including too many details was a good call. On the opposite side of that, I think that the full 2-page stories relating to huge cases known by most (Manson, Dahmer, etc.) were done incredibly well. Increased interest and details relating to these made extending them a good call for the author and improved reading for the readers.

While I did like this book, I do recognize that there are things that could have been done better. In this 162 page book, I read about 90% of the stories because each included a title and a brief summary, and occasionally I abandoned one out of lack of interest. I did not want a single bad story to ruin the rest of the book, so skipping them was a good call, but it does bring up the question of why they were included at all. For me, personally, I would take out some of the less interesting articles that I can assume other readers noticed and skipped as well. Reflecting on this, I think that the author included such detailed headlines in order to allow readers to assess their interests and move on if they are not. But overall, the flaws do not ruin this good book.
