When Susan Innes comes to visit her friend, Annie Rivers, in Chapel House, the deconsecrated church that Annie is renovating into a home, she discovers her outgoing friend changed, reclusive, secretive, and completely enthralled by a mysterious lover, whose presence is always felt, but never seen, a lover whom she claims is god. As her holiday turns into a nightmare, Susan must come to grips with the fact that her friend’s lover is neither imaginary nor is he human, and even worse, he’s turned his wandering eye on Susan, and he won’t be denied his prize. If Susan is to fight an inhuman stalker intent on having her as his own, she’ll need a little inhuman help.
For K D Grace, penning a good tale is a physical act. When she’s not writing, K D is veg gardening or walking. Her creativity is directly proportional to how much soil is under her fingernails or how quickly she wears out a pair of walking boots. She’s having a mad affair with a pair of kettle bells at her local gym and an even madder affair with a stainless steel pole in the pole fitness studio just across the street. She’s fascinated with mythology and fairy tales, which inspires many of her stories. She loves to read. She loves anything that gets her out of doors. But she loves writing a story best of all.
Voted ETO Best Erotic Author of 2014, K D is the author of sixteen novels and multiple novellas and short stories for multiple publishers. She also writes romance under the name Grace Marshall. At present she is excitedly publishing her Medusa’s Consortium urban fantasy series. The first three novels, beginning with In The Flesh, are now available.
No one writes paranormal fiction like KD Grace. In penning her tales of myths and magic, she plumbs psychological and spiritual depths that most authors don’t even realize exist. Ms. Grace ignores tropes and conventions, following the trail of her stories down the rabbit hole of her own fertile imagination. The truths she unearths amaze, arouse, terrify and delight.
In the Flesh shows more of this narrative serendipity than any of her other paranormal titles I’ve read. The novel began as a serial posted on her blog; I suspect that each installment was as much a discovery for her as it was for her fans. Certainly I found myself continually surprised by the story’s twists and turns, though in retrospect none of the plot devices seemed implausible. I just didn’t see them coming.
That’s a compliment. As anyone who reads my reviews will know, predictability in a story can really kill my enjoyment.
The tale begins when author Susan Innes is invited by her close friend Annie to visit Chapel House, the de-consecrated church Annie purchased six months previously. Susan finds Annie much changed. Her formerly plump, boisterous girlfriend has become skinny, pale and distracted, obsessed with a mysterious, invisible lover who she claims is God. As Susan watches Annie bathed in moonlight in front of the old altar, moaning and writhing with pleasure, she tries to rationalize her friend’s strange behavior as some sort of psychological illness.
However, Susan herself senses the presence of the unseen being who haunts the church’s half-ruined halls and overgrown garden. She feels his erotic pull, hears the promises of unspeakable ecstasy he whispers to her. Though she sees that Annie has been literally consumed by her spectral paramour and understands she is in danger of a similar fate, she cannot resist falling under his spell. Only the arrival of a burly workman named Michael saves her from losing herself completely.
Michael rips her out of the Guardian’s sphere of influence and takes her as his lover, but he cannot totally eradicate Susan’s irrational lust for the invisible but overwhelmingly seductive spirit. When the Guardian uses Annie to lure Susan back to his territory, Michael enlists the aid of allies equally powerful, and equally dangerous.
I don’t want to spoil things by saying too much more about the plot. However, the emotional and erotic intensity continue to build throughout the tale. There’s magic and terror and death, plus lots of sex—sex that involves deeper connections than the purely physical. As she did in her Lakeland Witches series, Ms. Grace explores the ways in which sexual experience is a gateway to new capabilities and states of consciousness.
As an author, though, there’s one aspect of the plot that I just have to mention. Susan gradually comes to understand that the act of writing is literally infused with magic. Her writing shapes reality. Even the supernatural creatures who surround her recognize and honor her awesome power as a true scribe—a woman whose imagination can alter the world, a woman whose words are made flesh.
I understand.
This is what it feels like to be a writer, on the best days when the ideas are flowing and the words write themselves. We’re immersed in the sacred act of creation, totally sure of ourselves, molding the universe in subtle but important ways. And this is perhaps what I loved best about In the Flesh: the fact that Susan manages to save herself and her companions not by casting a spell or wielding some enchanted sword, but by writing a story.
I really enjoyed the complexity and diversity of the characters in this book. From what was initially expected, after starting the book, this evolved into something that I didn't expect but yet loved.
Having read and loved a number of KG Grace's other books, this is by far the most intricate and developed to date. I was expecting erotica but what I found was a much more rounded storyline and one which kept me on the edge of my seat and even gave me a sleepless night or two!
Although dark and somewhat disturbing at times, especially in relation to the Guardian, this story grew as the pages turned and from what initially started out as perhaps a horror story, became more of a paranormal romance. There were vampires which may have put me off had I realised in advance, there were demons which definitely caught my attention, there were angels, well one, and his character was endearing and a host of other "beings". And then there's the Consortium which leads the story into book 2. However, I did struggle to engage fully with the two female leads in this book at first. Susan and her friend Annie took a while a while to grow on me but now Susan is just the incentive for me to read on.
Whilst I'm sure this story was meticulously planned and thought out, I did feel at times that the author didn't know where to take the Guardian story and morphed the storyline into something quite different, which I really enjoyed.

I received a copy of this book free of charge from the author, in return for an honest review.
I'm going to be perfectly honest here and say that this really isn't my usual type of book, but the title and cover drew me in without even reading the blurb! Had I read this first then I may not have given it a second glance, and what a mistake that would have been!!
KD has delivered an absolutely cracking tale of love, lust, anger and devotion in this first book of the Medusa's Consortium. I was engrossed from the offset and drawn into a world where the paths of the human and inhuman overlap with exciting, unexpected twists and turns every step of the way. The relationships formed are strong and emotional, and they're both unbelievable yet totally believable at the same time! There's something about KDs unique writing style which manages to captivate and intrigue the reader, making you race through the pages at breakneck speed to discover which direction the stories going to take… and I was way off the mark in my guessing! Highly recommended and I look forward to reading the next part.
A Dark and Lustful Delight! A brilliant read! In the Flesh, book #1 in the Medusa's Consortium series, is a sizzling and darkly erotic paranormal romance that will not only push your buttons but keep you on your toes with a plot that will keep you guessing. It contains some sizzling scenes that left me, like Susan the heroine, panting for more! I am certainly looking forward to more books in the series. I adored the main setting for the book, the gothic and decidedly eerie deconsecrated church in the North of England that Annie, Susan's friend, is renovating as her home. It is there that some truly terrifying events play out as first Annie and then Susan succumb to the entity in residence, a sexual predator who will not take no for an answer and whose powers and twisted desires are far from human... When Susan becomes his latest obsession will she too fall under his spell or will she be able to resist his addictive touch in which her sanity and very life is at risk? Is it already too late? Susan soon finds that she needs help if she is to resist and defeat the entity that would possess and devour her and help (and romance) comes from some unexpected sources. The read is packed full of suspense and danger and oozes lust and raw sexuality. Twists and turns abound as Susan's free will is threatened by dark desires she cannot control. Will she escape or will she succumb to the demon's almost god like powers over her desires? I just loved Michael, the builder who comes to Susan's aid and the many other supporting characters, all of whom are superbly well drawn and I am looking forward to getting to know more about them in future books in the series. I will not reveal much more, except to say that if you love dark erotic romances, especially those that delve into the depths of human desires and contain creatures of mythology and your darkest dreams then you need to read this book NOW! Please note that a copy of this book was given to me by the author for the purpose of a fair and honest review.

In the Flesh by K D Grace is the first book in her Medusa’s Consortium Series.
Susan’s friend Annie buys a deconsecrated church called Chapel House with plans to renovate it into a home for herself. She invites Susan to visit her at the church, but when Susan arrives, Annie is acting strange.
Annie is talking nonstop about her new boyfriend and how insatiable he is. The longer Susan is there, she starts to realize that something is not quite right in the church. She feels like there is someone there with her, but she can’t see them.
It turns out Annie’s new boyfriend isn’t human, and now he’s set his eyes on Susan.
Susan realizes she has to get them out of there, but that’s easier said then done. She finally escapes with the help of Michael, the contractor hired to do the renovations.
The longer Susan is around him, the more she starts to learn that the world she lives in and her place in it is not what she thought they were. The question is, can she survive it?
When I first started reading this book, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. It is based in a country that I am unfamiliar with so I had a little bit of a hard time envisioning it.
But I have to tell you, the longer I read it, the more it pulled me in. It isn’t your average ghost story. There is so much heat in this book, yet it doesn’t take away from the story line at all. The characters are so interesting and I found myself sympathizing with all of them, even the being in the church at times.
I highly recommend this book, and I can’t wait to read the next one!
Wow! To say that this novel is explosive is an understatement. Author K.D. Grace has created a magnificent landscape in London, where vampires and demons exist. The story tells of Susan Innes, and the battle her best friend Annie wages with her against an unseen entity. I truly felt for Susan and Annie, as they are both strong characters who have to face a terrifying fate. I only put it down to sleep. I am very eagerly anticipating book 2 in this series. I would suggest reading in order, as the story flows better that way. I did voluntarily review an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
In the flesh is a dark exotic paranormal novel, that is fantastically written! It grabs a hold of you from the start and throws your mind into a spiraling trance! I didn't want to put this book down to sleep, it is honestly unique and so out of the normal realm of paranormal.
If you like dark and twisty romance it is so worth the read! So much work as gone into this novel to give you that equal balance of horror and romance!
Great paranormal read! Susan goes on a holiday to visit a friend and notices her friend has changes since she has be renovating an old church into her new home. That is when her nightmare begins. This is a fast paced and exciting read with great characters. I loved it!
Mysterious, twisted and dangerous. I loved the mythology and all the different paranormal creatures present. I was always wondering what would happen next and enjoyed the little twists the story too. I look forward to reading more of not just Susan but the other characters as well.
In the flesh by K D Grace has an exceptionally beautiful & awesome cover ! The story itself brings words like 'magnificently written' & 'scary good' to mind. The characters range from superb to downright creepy & I enjoyed every one of them. This story drew me in & held my attention from the very beginning, with my anticipation growing from page to page & right through to the very end. I enjoyed reading this well written book & I definitely recommend adding 'In The Flesh' to your library.
Okay I was quite close in giving this book a 5/5 BUT the ending totally killed it for me. It isn’t as bad as I am making it out to be I was just quite disappointed with it that’s all so before I get to explaining why I didn’t like the ending let us recap the whole review first.
I felt that the plot was great as it really swept me away starting from the first sentence. Also, it was nice how the plot started in the middle of things and went on from there and this caused the whole plot to read like one long episode of Supernatural minus the appearance of Sam and Dean which is a shame I tell you. A damn shame. They would have fit perfectly with the plot even if it is just as eye candy. So, because for me it read like a Supernatural episode its super fast pacing of getting shit done within days didn’t really phase me because hello that’s what happens in Supernatural and that is also the reason why when the story has angels, vampires, succubus and the sort in the plot I really didn’t even bat an eye because it is exactly the same in Supernatural. After watching so many seasons of Supernatural one just goes with the flow of the plot.
Going on to the characters, I felt that they were okay for me. None of them aside from Medusa really gave me any lasting impression and honestly for me Susan was honest to God getting on my nerves. I can’t explain why she annoyed me she just does. She thinks she so innocent but girl you were the one who released that demon-thing so don’t try to wiggle yourself out from being responsible. She be all in denial she has any powers, her powers are that of a scribe and I have no idea what it’s supposed to do anyways and the reason why I disliked the ending was because Susan got to be the bad ass character that has super bad ass powers not only at the end she became a vampire but she also became a vampire that is immune to sunlight due to the help of the demon-thing and then she started being all arrogant and sooooooooo confident in her power. Pssshhhhh... And also the demon-thing went down without a fight. Honestly he was written to be this really powerful entity which uses the power of love, seduction and lust to get what he wants and at the end he and Susan had an uneasy truce and whatnot. I mean the first half of the book had everybody freaking out because he is so good at making people love him until there is no resistance and he gets what he wants always so I expected him to go out guns blazing and refusing to lose no matter what and not have the climax be all anticlimactic. I guess you can say I did not like the happy ending. I really hope the next book the demon-guardian-thing will use all its cunningness to get back at Susan. That would be a great read.
Aside from that, I also liked how Magda uses her consortium as her pawns against evil or whatever that stands in her way. Better use their supernatural powers for good is what I say. All in all, ‘In the flesh’ is a great read if you want something fast paced, has a Supernatural feel to it and also has erotica in it.

I LOVED the blurb of this book and thought the premise was super unique. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to set it aside @ Chapter 5. Personally I am just not connecting with the writing style or characters. I also feel TOO MUCH has already been revealed and there isn't any true mystery left ? Possibly will try again in the future.
I was thinking of only giving up temporarily but then a voice in my head started wondering Why? Answer to that is simply because I've been giving up on a lot of books lately. It's because I haven't enjoyed them, but I just feel like it's been happening too often. Is it the books or me?
