A wonderful book full of meaning! In a world where we are inundated with xenophobic and separative messages, where debate on building walls are prevalent, this book is refreshing! The spirit of aloha that is so eloquently expressed in this book provides a significant message for us all (adult and children alike). This book was delightful to read with my daughter and her friends. Having visited Hawaii we enjoyed Charlie's tour of Oahu. It was fun learning about the Hawaiian culture and picking up some Hawaiian words (which we will use on our next visit). Although there has been discussion around the age appropriateness of this book, my daughter six loved it and so did all her friends (the youngest five). A memorable book which stays true to the gorgeous Hawaiian culture. It gives a good reminder to us all of the importance of being kind and humble in our manner (even as reviewers!)

The intentions of this book are good. My lowish score for it is because I question how well it speaks to its intended audience. Another review here says that its target audience is suggested as 3—6 years but the reviewer felt it was more appropriate for 4—7 years. IMHO, a 7-year-old who can fully understand this book without some adult guidance would be a genius. As someone who has spent a lot of time working with kids, I have to say I would not expect it to hold the attention of many kids of any age. If you disagree with me, try it on a class and let me know how it goes.

I read "Charlie's Adventures in South Africa" by Jacqueline de Rose-Ahern. It is a story about a boy who goes to South Africa for a holiday. It is very informative! A great book!

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

There’s just one thing wrong with this picture book. There wasn’t another in the series to go out and buy as soon as I got to the end. Seriously, I was bowled over by the heart-warming charm of this touching story and its lively illustrations—which include a map in a pocket on the inside back cover. Being ‘wowed’ by a travel adventure is not something I expected to happen when I first dipped inside its covers. Maybe it was the word game that was the drawcard. I’m always a sucker for a story that involves wordplay and this one involves a bit of detective work as well!

There’s an aspect of a treasure hunt to the story. As Charlie goes to different parts of the island, he’s taught about significant Hawaiian words. Words like unity, humility, kindness. Once put together, their first letters spell out ‘Aloha’ and his adventure becomes one of learning what makes up the Aloha spirit.

Although the target audience is suggested to be 3–6 years, I suspect the concepts might be better directed to an age group just a tad older. Maybe 4–7 years.
