to be honest i still don't understand why i read self-help books because i don't actually help myself.. but nevermind

on average the book is no worse or any better than the standard psycho-babble book.

it has interesting bits in it in regard to meditation, research into medication and only a tiny bit about how 'God loves you'.
as with any self-help book it's no magical cure. you have to carry out the steps to actually see results

I recently read Coping with Anxiety and Depression by Shirley Trickett because I wanted to improve my understanding of anxiety and depression. As someone that is currently studying topics that are related to mental health, I thought this book would help me gain more insight into these conditions and allow me to incorporate that understanding into my school coursework. The book is written as a self-help guide that explains how anxiety and depression can develop and offers practical ways to cope with them, including different treatment approaches and real-life case examples.

One of the things I appreciated most about the book was how clearly it explains complex mental health topics. The author discusses the causes and symptoms of anxiety and depression in a way that it is easy to understand, which makes the book accessible for readers who may not have medical or psychological background. I also found the case histories particularly helpful because they show how different people experience these conditions and the ways that they try to manage them. Reading these examples was able to help me understand that mental health struggles can affect people in many different ways.

However, there were a few aspects that did not work as well for me. At times the advice felt slightly dated, which is understandable given that the book was first published several decades ago. Some of the sections also felt quite brief, and I would have liked it to be more detailed explanations about certain coping strategies and treatments. Because it is a relatively short book, I sometimes felt that certain topics could have been explored in greater depth.

Overall, I still found Coping with Anxiety and Depression to be a useful and informative read. It had helped me to understand anxiety and depression in a more practical and personal way rather than just through academic definitions. Reading it gave me ideas about how I could be able to discuss these mental health conditions within my coursework, and think more critically about how people are able to manage them in everyday life. Although it has some limitations, I believe it is a helpful introductory book for anyone that is wanting to learn more about anxiety, depression and ways to cope with them.

This book is a little outdated and to be honest I read it before I was willing to seek help for my depression. Still, a lot of it was useful information and the quite concise book is worth a read if you suffer from a combination of anxiety and depression (so a fair few of us, then)
