Totally enjoyed this book, although written years ago, before I was born. I felt I was on Port's shoulder, observing what he experienced. War is an ugly thing. His story brought me there, to the bad and the good.

Cuckoo Over Vienna is a spectacular journey through World War 2. The narrator is a bit harder to relate to now — the war was over more than 80 years ago. But to see through the eyes of an 18-year-old kid witnessing a world aflame — it’s goodness, barbarity, and irony — is amazing. What I wouldn’t give to talk to my own grandfather about these topics again.

My only gripes are that you can tell that this was a novel published by the author and without much editing. The author, writing on the topic some 50 years later, could have given some more critical thought or insights as to what has changed since that time. Last critiques: the narrative structure ends abruptly, drops and adds characters left and right. But for what it is, this is absolutely worth a read for anyone interested in WW2.

Absolutely stunning first person tale of survival and resilience. Somewhat biased because we lived near him at the end of his life and he and my Dad (also a WWII veteran) became close friends. He was a humble brilliant man who knew how to weave his true life story!
