Reno McCarthy, intrepid investigative reporter for Chicago's Channel 14 television news, makes his second appearance in Cummings' Every Secret Crime.

While covering the death investigation of the son of well-known Chicago personalities, McCarthy must deal with political corruption, corporate shenanigans and the critical illness of an old family friend. McCarthy has a lot on his plate but Cummings manages to keep us turning pages no matter which situation McCarthy faces.

Overall, this novel moves more smoothly than the first McCarthy and Cummings has obviously grown as a writer. There is greater depth to Reno this time and I suspect Cummings will treat us to even more in the next book.

A reporting procedural in the vein of Tony Hillerman's "The Fly on the Wall." Will double back to first in series, "Deader by the Lake."
