He started off as an author and journalist, but moved on to be an active writer in the Indian film industry for 7 years. He worked as a drama producer in All India Radio between December 1953 and May 1956. At this point he realised that a regular job would always be a hindrance to his literary life, so he devoted himself to freelance writing.
Often cited as the true literary heir of Premchand, Amritlal Nagar created his own independent and unique identity as a littérateur and is counted as one of the most important and multi-faceted creative writers of Indian literature.
It's always comforting to revisit an epic like Mahabharata because no matter how many times you return to it, it always finds a new way to speak to you. And that’s exactly why I’m drawn to retellings. They offer fresh lenses, new interpretations, and sometimes, a deeper emotional connection to stories we think we already know.
Reading Mahabharat Katha (Hindi Edition) by Amritlal Nagar felt like stepping into that familiar world, but this time, through the cadence of Hindi. And I have to say, experiencing this epic in a different language added a certain charm. The idioms, the phrasing, the almost textbook-like structure felt like flipping through the pages of a Hindi literature book from school.
But somewhere along the way, I found myself wanting more. More depth. More pauses. More time with the characters who define this epic.
The storytelling, while clear and accessible, felt closer to a summary than an immersive journey. The Mahabharata is layered with moral dilemmas, emotional conflicts, and complex characters. Still, here those layers felt slightly rushed, as though we were skimming through moments that deserved to be lingered over.
That said, I chose to go the audiobook route because that brought a certain ease and flow to the story, making it a comfortable listen, especially for such a vast epic. If you’re someone who prefers absorbing mythology in a lighter, more digestible format, this works beautifully.
So, I just finished it and as it name suggest mahbharat katha it is in same way of small story with interesting writing. So some things seem fast but the way things build up till war is awesome. Best part of this book is it also present us the detail of place in today’s world where Mahabharat had connections from newzeland to china.
