A fascinating history of the laying waste of around a third of a community in Bristol, in the name of a road scheme which never got built - and of the spirit of those left behind.
Totterdown is a suburb of Bristol, largely demolished in the 1960s to make way for a huge road scheme that never got built.
As a study of local government silliness it's of general interest. There's a lot of detail on the constant changing plans, policies and finances.
It would be nice to say that such ruthless destruction of communities in the interests of grandiose plans was a thing of the past, but I doubt it.
The book is thoroughly researched, well written and well illustrated. My only complaint is the absence of sensible street maps. The author constantly refers to streets that have changed. Even someone who knows the area might have to look some of them up.
