Organization and Administration of Adult Education Programs

Rate this book
Administrators of adult education programs work in dynamic and everchanging environments. They are continually challenged with a myriad of issues related to program budgeting, marketing, strategic planning, funding, human resources, and other topics. With decades of real world experience in the field, Steven Schmidt and Susan Yelich Biniecki have developed a practical guide for those who are involved in the organization and administration of educational programs for adults. Whether you work in the human resource department of a corporation, a grassroots community organization, a higher education unit, a consulting company, or any other type of organization that provides adult education, this book is for you. In a nononsense approach, Organization and Administration of Adult Education A Guide for Practitioners “talks” to you as an administrator about topics that are important to you. Guidelines, processes, and procedures discussed in the book can help to make you a more effective practitioner. Scenarios, role plays, and activities are also included for classroom use and personal reflection.

The M.Ed. in Adult and Lifelong Learning degree will prepare students for employment in programs that provide adult literacy and education, lifelong learning, community and nonprofit organizations, military education, post-secondary education, and continuing professional education. The program will focus on the development of students as emerging scholars and practitioners.
Students pursuing the M.Ed. degree may also pursue adult education licensure in order to serve as adult education instructors at state-approved adult education and literacy programs.
As businesses and organizations collectively tighten their belts, employers are adding more stringent hiring requirements for new employees, and corporations are placing a stronger emphasis on education and training at all levels in the workplace. Such actions have led to an increased need for qualified adult education professionals in a variety of businesses, healthcare, community centers, higher education institutions, and corporate training centers.
As a graduate of this program, you can be qualified to provide leadership in one or more of the following domains of adult education practice: teaching and learning for adults, curriculum and instructional design and development in adult education, program planning and administration for adult learners, or curriculum and/or program evaluation within adult education programming.
The qualities of a good teacher include strong speaking, writing, and listening skills; teamwork; patience; empathy; and a love of learning. These qualities also help learners excel in their master's in adult education programs. Working on your communication skills is one way to prepare for graduate school.
An online master's in adult education program generally requires the same courses and the same number of credits as an on-campus program. This program usually requires 30-36 credits and takes about two years to complete.
Students enrolled in a master's in adult education program learn about educational policy, the social and cultural foundations of education, and methods for teaching adult students. They also gain skills in organization and administration of higher education.
Some schools require a final master's project or thesis from students. This capstone project may be worth 1-6 college credits, and students may need approval from an advisor before beginning the project.
