Linda was born in Swindon. Her family moved to Ely in Cambridgeshire when she was nine, and Linda attended the local school but left at fifteen to work as a hairdresser in her father's business. She was married at eighteen and ran her own hairdressing business for some years before moving to Cambridge, although Linda has now moved to somewhere a bit quieter in Cambridgeshire. She started writing in 1976, combining this with helping her husband to run his antique shop.
Writing as Anne Herries, Linda won the 2004 RNA Romance Award and the Betty Neels Trophy. She lives in Cambridgeshire. After many happy years of taking their holidays in Spain she and her husband, now have a second home in Norfolk. Being only a short drive, they can visit for a few days at a time, which suits their busy lifestyle these days. They are only just across the road from the sea, and can see it from their windows. At home and at the sea they enjoy watching the wildlife and have many visitors to their gardens, particularly squirrels. Anne loves watching their antics and spoils both them and her birds shamelessly. She also loves to see the flocks of geese and other birds flying in over the sea during the autumn, to winter in the milder climes of this country. Anne loves to write about the beauty of nature and sometimes puts a little into her books, though they are mostly about love and romance. She writes for her own enjoyment and to give pleasure to her readers.
A historical romance that attempts to be a grand love saga. But turns out as a mediocre story with no great memorable moments.
Historical romances often have the problem of stereotypes and generalizations. The author doesn't invest much effort in getting the period, the wars, the kingdoms and other facts accurate. Just generic descriptions of aristocrats in the royal British court. A plot to kill the king. The hero is a loyalist to the king, but shows rowdy tendencies. These are common traits in all these stories.
Then comes the aspects related to the female lead. She is the only woman with morals in all these plots. Otherwise, the life of an idle rich aristocrat is simply debauchery. Marry for wealth. Men and women carry on with numerous affairs post marriage. Bastard children, amorous encounters in the royal court. This is all one gets to read. If this was really the way the British history portrays the royal way of life, it is deeply depressing. I only hope its more poetic exaggeration than fact !!!!
If only the heroine in this story could really stand out as that sparkling exceptional character in this setting, I would have loved the story. but she doesn't. She is just a tentative, ordinary virgin girl. Brought up by an uncle and aunt. Written of into the care of a 'guardian' by dead parents. The guardian is not the old uncle. Its the bachelor hero. So half the book is about transitioning from stern guardian to lover like hero. Could have been a fun premise. But presented in a stale manner.
The relationship suddenly progresses to kisses and intimacies in bed. Followed by a shot gun wedding. Then the royal duties of saving the kind, blah blah. I really wanted savor the delicate relationship between a young, impressionable but vivacious girl and a world weary warrior hero. Did not feel that kinship between them.
Another unnecessary exaggeration is to get every single male in the story to fall for the heroine. Its not required you know. From the king to the villain, to the hero'es friends. Gimme a break. She doesn't come across as that kind of of femme fatale or angelic beauty !!!!!
Ok read. Could have been a really good one. But for lack of involved writing.
