A Short History of Syriac Literature

Rate this book
"Although William Wright's famous book is over a century old and so is inevitably outdated in certain respects, nevertheless his unsurpassed knowledge of Syriac literature, gained through cataloging the very large collection of Syriac manuscripts in the British Museum (now, British Library), means that his Short History of Syriac Literature still remains an extremely valuable resource, and it is most welcome to have it made available again." - Dr. Sebastian P. Brock, University of Oxford

This reprint of an extensive article that appeared in an 1887 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica features additional notes by William Wright.

While Wright packs in a lot of information, this book suffers from a lack of any sort of overall structure which goes beyond merely listing authors with works and short biographies in chronological order. The book does not give a sense of the history of Syriac literature so much as a catalog.
