It re-creates the world of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, chronicling the relationship between Lewis and Clark and their French-Canadian guides, recounting the crucial hospitality of the Native American people they encountered, and showing how, without both groups, the expedition would not have succeeded. The French-Canadian guide Toussaint Charbonneau is introduced, along with his young Shoshone wife, the legendary Sacagawea, who endeared herself to Clark for her determination and helpfulness. Detailed archival maps, photographs, paintings, and a complete bibliography are included.

Ouvrage à la fois exhaustif, abondamment illustré et rigoureusement documenté, qui plonge le lecteur dans un contexte politique aussi complexe que tourmenté, tout en constituant une véritable mine d’informations, notamment sur le rôle déterminant joué par les Canadiens français ou leurs descendants dans le succès de cette expédition — une contribution encore trop peu connue, voire largement sous-estimée. Plusieurs figures historiques, dont Toussaint Charbonneau, y ressortent, bien qu’elles soient aujourd’hui malheureusement tombées dans l’oubli, victimes du passage du temps.

En toile de fond se dessine aussi le destin des États-Unis et leur future expansion territoriale, portée par la vision du président Thomas Jefferson, à l’origine de cette expédition et de l’achat de la Louisiane. Par ailleurs, la vente de la Louisiane en 1803, par la France napoléonienne, s’inscrit parmi les grands événements diplomatiques du début du XIXᵉ siècle puisqu'elle favorisa l’expansion des États-Unis et redessina durablement la géopolitique nord-américaine.

Si certains passages tiennent le lecteur en haleine, d’autres s’avèrent plus techniques, répétitifs ou lourds ; on s’y perd parfois dans les détails et les digressions.

Whilst fascinating and insightful, there's no denying this book is in desperate need of a good editor. How many footnotes and sidebars offer information already given in the main text, or presented further on? How many times does the narrative circle round and make the same point multiple times? Repetitive and distractingly formatted, this takes a lot to get through, which is a real shame as at its heart is a wonderful piece of history writing.
