About the author

Frank Roderus

Frank Roderus wrote his first story—it was a western—when he was five. It was really awful, as might be expected, but his mother kept that typed and spell-checked short story tucked away until the day she died.
Later, Frank became a newspaper reporter, thinking that books are written by authors which he most assuredly was not. He kept trying to write though, and eventually did it wrong enough to learn how to get it right. That first sale, a young adult novel published by Independence Press, was more than thirty years and a good many books ago.
As a journalist, the Colorado Press Association awarded Frank Roderus their highest award, the Sweepstakes Award, for the best news story of 1980, and the Western Writers of America has twice named Frank recipient of their prestigious Spur Award. Frank passed away at age 73 in December 2015.

This book is a cabin-fever western, similar in feel to the Hateful * movie (though far less brutal than Tarantino). It's focused around five people caught in a cabin, two decent man, one woman, and two outlaw types. I'd probably say it's a 3.5 rather than a 3 star read, but it has some issues. The build-up is very long, which was kind of annoying at times because there's no ambiguity of the good and bad here. And while the villains were somewhat developed, the author left the protagonists curiously shallow. All you know about one is that he's a shipping clerk, and the other that he's prospecting gold. The wife is even less developed, mostly being a damsel figure. Sure, you want them to win, but I can't particularly memorable. The talkative, cocky outlaw and his simplistic man-child sidekick got much more attention, leaving it feeling a little unbalanced. And while the build-up is longer than it needs to be, it does pick up in the end and get more interesting.

A FR Western About A Man Working His Way Through the Mountains

FR had penned a western about a young man who took what he thought was a short cut through the mountains. He finds a cabin with a miner and his wife who have stored an immense amount of gold. The young man settled in until two outlaws show up and take over. One outlaw kills his partner and then the young man kills the second outlaw. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

Trapped in a miner's cabin because winter comes to soon a husband and wife wait for spring to free them. A man finds the cabin and needs it to save his life. Two more men join the group and they bring danger. A good story and a great writer. I hope to read more books from this author.
