I appreciated the accompanying biography in this book. Some of the analysis of the art I disagree with, such as Daumier's indifference to children. (For a man indifferent to children he painted them an awful lot, though always in relation to an adult.)

A biopic of Daumier could serve as something of a history of 19th century France. While famous and respected as an artist for years it was not until his final years, and much help from his friends, that his life became secure. Famous to the public for his drawings, they and the critics pigeon-holed him and did not realize his talent as painter and sculptor. Only fellow artists saw the talent he was.

He was also something of a flake, who would receive commissions, even payment for them and not deliver. I wonder if this was due to it becoming his habit of doing painting for himself that it became less enjoyable to do it for someone else, because he delivered on drawings. (I can relate.)
