An increasing number of young German architects are taking off--becoming key players in global architecture. MAYER H., Kirsten Schemel Architekten, KSP Engel und Zimmermann Architekten, KSV Krüger Schuberth Vandreike, Pysall Ruge Architekten, sauerbruch hutton, Staab Architekten and Wandel Hoefer Lorch + Hirsch, are all currently working on their first large projects outside of Germany. These firms have in common the ability to innovate, to integrate designs into existing urban contexts and to maintain exacting technical standards--crucial skills for winning highly competitive competitions and contracts. In this volume, each firm, along with its engineering partner, presents a current commission from outside of Germany in addition to a finished building in Germany, providing an in-depth look at its development.

The concept of the exhibition "Ready for Take-Off" is based not the hypothesis that German architects and engineers are in great demand internationally because they embody "typically German" values and secondary virtues. They are industrious, dependable, orderly, punctual, and dutiful - and not just in their working lives. This becomes particularly evident when they make their appearance on the international scene. Naturally, these virtues do not make a successful architect out of an ordinary one, especially if he/she is surrounded by colleagues with much the same qualities. But long years of experience in the export business show that the good reputation of the Germans and the German construction industry can be extremely helpful in securing a foothold in foreign markets and obtaining commissions there.
