Daniella Bernett, author of Lead Me Into Danger, scribes an equally well-written and engaging mystery in this second adventure featuring spirited journalist, Emmeline Kirby; compassionate jewel thief, Gregory Longdon; and my particular favorite, sharp-witted, over-worked, and especially likable Chief Inspector Oliver Burnell. I enjoyed the read, and I look forward to the sequels.

Billed as the heist of the century, ‘Deadly Legacy’ did not disappoint. Murder is a nasty business, but when alluring diamonds are thrown into the mix, revenge is bound to take place. Thus, journalist Emmiline Kirkby gets dragged into the search for the stolen diamonds, after her friend Claire’s fiancé – Ambrose Kent is killed. No more spoilers!

Daniella Bernett has certainly pulled out all the stops on this one. ‘Deadly Legacy,’ Book 2 in the series, is a fast-paced thriller that will have you gripped from the onset. This is a highly recommended read, and I’m looking forward to book 3 in the series.

Second in the author’s Emmeline Kirby/Gregory Longdon Mystery series, Deadly Legacy reads smoothly and quickly with shades of television's “The Saint,” wonderful English accents and classic London locations. A highbrow mystery worthy of Inspector Lynley, it pits newspaper reporter Emmeline, the deeply mysterious Gregory, and a wonderful police inspector against mafia diamond thieves, murderers and more. Can a child, rich or poor, ever escape the sins of the father though? And can those who belong to the Old Testament’s faith escape the cruelties of the past.

An aristocratic family built on lies, a wonderful investigator molded by tragedy, a cool and mysterious savior… the scene is set for a book that reads like part of a television series, smooth, humorous, puzzling, exciting, and very very good fun.

Disclosure: I was lucky enough to be given an ARC copy and I love it. (Now I want to read book 1!)

This book certainly kept me guessing until the end! Wow - what a twist. I never saw it coming, but then again, I love to be surprised. I'm not the kind of reader who tries to guess the end. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Aside from the mystery and the ending, I think what I loved the most was the way this book gave me an authentic feel for the UK and London. I've never been there, but the writing had a British feel to it. There were words I'd never heard used in a certain way, but I could tell their meaning from the context. It always reminded me while I was reading that this story takes place in London and I really appreciated that. Overall - great job by a relatively new author. I am looking forward to her next book!

*Note - I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

An injustice dating back to WWII resurfaces in the present day in the form of stolen diamonds, mistaken identity, and bitter grudges between two key families. Journalist Emmeline Kirby finds herself thrust in the middle seemingly by accident, but at the outset she has no clue how deeply involved she really is. With the help of long-suffering Chief Inspector Burnell and Emmeline's ex-lover, charming, cheeky Gregory Longdon, she comes to grips with both the past and present, but at a great loss professionally and emotionally. I found this story to be exciting, twisty, and surprising!

Deadly Legacy is the second book in the Emmeline Kirby/Gregory Longdon Mysteries series by Daniella Bernett, and it did not disappoint.

We are reunited with many of the characters we’ve met before, along with many new ones. There are more murders to be solved, and Emmeline needs to be extracted from trouble repeatedly. Gregory is sometimes there at the right time, but others come to her rescue as well.

Emmeline tries to piece together whodunnit this time along with the police, she is often in over her head and finally realizes it. There is a lot of intrigue and some political manipulations, too. Are the murders committed by the same person, and what are the red flags?

A betrayal from someone Emmeline considered a friend leaves Emmeline not knowing which end is up. Details concerning why this is happening may temporarily slow her down, but it doesn’t deter her from being in the thick of things. Throw in some red herrings, and things tend to get interesting fast.

Ms. Bernett writes her characters with depth, and her storylines are well-plotted. There are connections to the first book in the series, Lead Me Into Danger, and it was definitely a nice touch. It answered some questions I didn’t even know I had! There is enough backstory given that this book can easily be a stand-alone novel, but there is a nice flow and connect-the-dot moments if the books are read in order.

As with the Lead Me Into Danger, Ms. Bernett writes in vivid descriptions, making me feel I was there. Gregory is still hoping to reunite with Emmeline more romantically, but she doesn’t seem to want that, or does she?

There are many antisemitic remarks again, and Emmeline is horrified to hear whose mouths they are being uttered from. There is some closure but many more stories to tell, and I, for one, look forward to reading them all.

Ms. Bernett is an author whose caliber of writing I genuinely enjoy. No detail is too small, and every word and action enhances the story. If you like mysteries with intrigue, lots of action, and characters who have depth to them, give her books a try.

I rated the book 4.5 stars but rounded to 5 stars here and on other sites.

I have eagerly awaited the release of the second Emmeline Kirby and Gregory Longdon mystery ever since I finished Lead Me Into Danger. Deadly Legacy did not disappoint! Daniella Bernett has a wonderful way of engaging the reader and once the story begins it is hard to put down. Deadly Legacy takes the reader on a twisted journey from stolen diamonds to murder. It is up to the intrepid duo of Emmeline and Gregory to unravel the case. I loved every minute of it. Looking forward to book three. It can't come soon enough in my opinion.
